Chapter 8 - The Morning After the Storm

Two days later, the news broke across national headlines: a massive international smuggling and extortion ring headquartered in New York and Chicago had been completely dismantled in a coordinated federal raid, its primary leaders arrested under federal racketeering and terrorism charges.
On the Moretti estate, however, the world felt smaller, quieter, and entirely at peace.
The morning sun washed over the sparkling courtyard where the snow had finally melted, replaced by the early green shoots of spring grass.
Sophia Carter stood in the doorway of the servants' annex, holding a steaming mug of coffee, watching a scene that would have seemed completely impossible just two weeks prior.
Sitting on the porch steps in the warm sunlight was Alessandro Moretti. His suit jacket was discarded over a nearby chair, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows, and a small, pink plastic cup sat on the stone beside him.
Right beside him, resting his massive head contentedly across the hem of Alessandro’s trousers, was Bruno.
A few feet away, Emma was kneeling in the dirt with a plastic yellow gardening shovel, trying valiantly to plant a dandelion into a potted geranium.
“Mr. Moretti,” Sophia called out softly as she stepped outside.
Alessandro turned his head, his dark expression softening into a gentle, genuine smile that the New York underworld had never been privileged to see.
“Call me Alessandro, Sophia,” he reminded her gently, standing up and brushing a speck of dirt from his trousers.
“Alessandro,” she corrected with a small, appreciative smile. “The estate managers called from the main house. They want to know when you’ll be returning to your private study office.”

Alessandro looked down at Bruno, who gave a lazy thump of his tail against the porch. Then he looked over at Emma, who was now attempting to crown the dog with a daisy chain she had woven out of clover.
“Tell them,” Alessandro said quietly, “that my office has permanently relocated.”
