Chapter 10 - Ground Level

Spring arrived in Boston with a rush of green across the Whitmore estate grounds, melting the last remnants of winter snow into sparkling rivulets across the stone terraces.
The grand ballroom of Whitmore House was filled once more, but this time, there were no silk linens imported from Italy, no three-hundred-person guest lists composed of strangers, and no cameras broadcasting artificial perfection to the tabloids.
It was a small, intimate gathering of trusted friends, loyal staff members who had stood by the estate for decades, and a few close business associates who valued integrity over status.
Ethan stood at the front of the courtyard beneath the old oak trees, wearing a sharp dark suit without a tie, looking relaxed and completely at home.
And then the heavy oak doors opened.
Naomi stepped out onto the stone patio. She wore a simple, elegant ivory silk dress that moved with effortless grace, her dark hair swept back in a soft twist secured not by diamond pins, but by a simple silver clasp.
The guests turned, breaking into warm, genuine applause. There were no gasps of shock, no terrorized socialites, and no frantic reporters. Just the quiet, resonant hum of people who knew the true value of standing on solid ground.
Ethan watched her walk toward him, every step deliberate, balanced, and completely unshakeable.
As she reached his side, Ethan took her hands in his. His fingers were warm, steady, and entirely free of the tension that had defined him when they first met in the dark kitchen months ago.
"You know," Ethan whispered with a soft smile, leaning in close so only she could hear, "security protocol dictates that you aren't supposed to get distracted on duty."
Naomi looked up into his eyes, a playful glint dancing in her dark gaze. "My protocol says the highest threat has been successfully neutralized, Mr. Whitmore."
"And what threat was that?"
May you like
"Loneliness," she murmured.
Ethan smiled, pulling her closer against his side as the afternoon sun broke through the old estate trees, casting a warm, golden light across the polished stone. For Naomi Reyes, the running had finally stopped. She hadn't found peace by hiding in the background or running from her past; she had found it by standing her ground, holding fast, and building a future that was entirely, unshakeably level.
