Chapter 9 - The Unseen Shield

By late winter, the snow outside Whitmore House had frozen into thick, glittering crusts, but inside, the estate radiated a warmth it hadn't felt in decades.
Ethan had successfully renegotiated Whitaker Development’s core municipal contracts, pivoting the firm toward sustainable urban architecture—a passion project he had buried for years under the weight of his family’s traditional expectations. He walked into boardrooms with a new authority, his shoulders back, his eyes clear and sharp.
And Naomi was always there. Not as a shadow hiding in the corners, but as an unyielding, professional presence just out of sight.
One evening, a high-profile charity gala was hosted at a downtown Boston hotel—the very kind of high-society networking event Ethan used to dread attending. This time, however, he walked into the grand ballroom with absolute confidence, his arm linked securely with Naomi’s.
She wore a sleek, tailored black evening suit—a sharp, elegant nod to her past life—with her dark hair falling in soft waves around her shoulders. She didn't carry a tray or wear an apron. She carried absolute, quiet authority.
As they entered the room, the collective chatter of the elite dipped momentarily. Whispers rippled through the crowd as society columnists recognized the man who had spectacularly dumped his high-profile fiancée weeks prior—and the striking woman accompanying him.
A prominent real estate developer, a man known for his aggressive business tactics and slippery handshakes, stepped directly into Ethan’s path, blocking his way with a wide, insincere smile.
"Ethan! Good to see you weathering the storm," the developer boomed loudly, casting a critical, assessing glance toward Naomi. "Bold move bringing... well, bringing new company so soon after the wedding cancellation. Hope she knows how to handle herself in high-stakes circles."
The developer extended a hand toward Naomi, his fingers curling with patronizing familiarity. "I'm Arthur Vance. And you must be—”
Before Arthur could finish the sentence, Naomi’s hand moved with fluid, blinding speed. She didn't strike him; instead, she intercepted his extended hand with a precise, unbreakable grip at the wrist, her thumb pressing just firmly enough against his radial nerve to drop his posture instantly.
Arthur’s smile vanished, replaced by a sudden gasp of shock as his knees buckled a fraction of an inch under the sudden leverage.
Naomi maintained absolute, chilling eye contact, her voice smooth and low. "Mr. Vance. My name is Naomi Reyes. I handle security for Mr. Whitmore. And I suggest you keep your distance—both physically and professionally."
Arthur swallowed hard, sweat instantly beading on his forehead as he realized the terrifying strength hidden behind her polite facade. He yanked his hand back the second she released her grip, stammering an incoherent apology before retreating rapidly into the crowd.
Ethan looked down at Naomi, a deep, admiring laugh escaping his chest. He shook his head, offering his arm to her once more. "Remind me never to get on your bad side."
May you like
"You already survived the worst of it," Naomi replied with a faint smirk, her eyes softening as she looked up at him. "You drank my chamomile tea."
They walked deeper into the ballroom, surrounded by lights and noise, but for the first time in both of their lives, neither of them felt like they were wearing a mask.
