Chapter 3 - THE UNMASKING OF DR. HAYES

The conservatory was a massive, glass-domed room filled with exotic orchids, marble statues, and soft ambient lighting.

Dr. Victoria Hayes was pacing frantically across the geometric tile floor, her high heels clicking loudly in the quiet room. Two tall, dark-suited security guards stood silently near the double doors, their arms folded, completely ignoring her furious demands.

"This is an absolute outrage!" Victoria screamed, turning as the heavy glass doors swung open. "Gabriel! I demand you let me leave this house immediately! I am a respected physician! I have surgical rotations at Cedars-Sinai tomorrow morning! You cannot hold me here like a prisoner because your addict cleaning lady poisoned your children!"

Gabriel stepped into the conservatory.

He didn't speak immediately. He walked to the center of the room, stopping ten feet from her. Behind him came Lucia, walking side by side with him, holding her head high.

Victoria’s eyes narrowed into slits when she saw Lucia standing beside Gabriel—not in handcuffs, not in tears, but looking at her with a quiet, powerful dignity that made Victoria’s stomach turn.

"Gabriel, why is she out of restraints?!" Victoria demanded, her voice rising into a sharp, shrill screech. "She belong in a federal cell! I found the drug under her pillow! Mr. Henry was a witness!"

"Mr. Henry," Gabriel said calmly, looking toward the door, "was a witness to your trap, Victoria. Nothing more."

Gabriel motioned to Kaelen, who walked forward carrying a slim metal briefcase. Kaelen opened the briefcase, facing the screen directly toward Victoria, and pressed play.

The high-definition video filled the glass room with light.

Victoria’s voice, recorded in perfect, uncompressed audio by the nursery’s hidden microphone system, echoed through the conservatory:

"This house was supposed to be mine..."

On the screen, the video showed Victoria’s face twisted in rage as she uncapped the syringe and plunged the needle into little Bella’s leg. It showed her cold, calculated smile as she drew the plunger back, then carefully placed the empty vial into her pocket to plant in Lucia’s room moments later.

Victoria’s face went from flushed red to a sickly, translucent grey in less than two seconds. Her knees visibly buckled, and she had to reach out to grab the edge of a marble display table to keep from falling.

"No..." Victoria whispered, her breath coming in short, panicked gasps. "No... that’s... that’s an AI fabrication! That’s edited! Gabriel, you know me! I’ve cared for your family for years! I loved those babies!"

"You didn't love them," Gabriel said, taking a single, slow step toward her. The raw, lethal aura radiating from him was so intense that Victoria took an instinctual step back, hitting the glass wall of the conservatory. "You used my daughters' suffering as a stepping stone to enter my life. And when a kind, innocent woman showed up and gave them the relief you couldn't provide, you tried to murder a six-month-old child to protect your pathetic pride."

"Gabriel, please!" Victoria dropped to her knees on the cold tile, her expensive white coat dragging in the dust, her hands clasped together in desperate plea. "I did it for us! I knew if that woman stayed, she would come between us! She’s a nobody! She’s a servant! I am the woman who belongs beside you! I have the name, the status, the intellect—"

"You have nothing," Gabriel interrupted, his voice colder than Arctic ice. "You are a hollow, malicious monster masquerading in a doctor’s coat."

He turned his back on her, looking at Kaelen.

"The LAPD Major Crimes Division is waiting outside the gate," Kaelen said smoothly. "Detective Miller is leading the team personally."

Four uniformed police officers, accompanied by two homicide detectives, stepped through the conservatory doors. Detective Miller walked straight up to Victoria, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt.

"Dr. Victoria Hayes," Detective Miller said, his voice booming in the quiet room. "You are under arrest for attempted murder, assault on a minor with a deadly controlled substance, tampering with evidence, and filing a false police report. You have the right to remain silent."

As the steel cuffs clicked around Victoria’s wrists, she began to scream—a loud, unhinged, desperate sound that echoed through the marble hallways of the estate.

"Gabriel! You can't do this to me! My father is on the medical board! My family will destroy you! Gabriel!"

The officers dragged her out through the double doors. Her shrieks faded down the long driveway until the heavy iron gates of the estate finally slammed shut, cutting her off from the Whitmore family forever.

The conservatory went silent.

Lucia let out a long, ragged breath, her shoulders sagging as the immense weight of the afternoon finally began to lift from her chest. She looked up at Gabriel, her dark eyes filled with deep gratitude.

"Thank you, Mr. Whitmore," Lucia whispered. "Thank you for believing in me when no one else would."

Gabriel turned to her. He didn't look like the cold, terrifying billionaire the world knew. He looked like a man who had finally found his footing in the dark.

"You don't ever have to thank me, Lucia," Gabriel said softly, reaching out to gently touch her shoulder. "You saved my daughters. Now, it’s my turn to protect you."
