Chapter 4 - THE DOCTOR'S TERRIFYING SECRET

Though Victoria was behind bars, one burning question still hung over the Whitmore mansion like a thick, dark cloud.

Why had Bella and Sophie cried every single day for five months?

The next morning, while Victoria was being held without bail in a county detention facility, Gabriel’s specialized medical team—led by Dr. Marcus Vance, the renowned Chief of Pediatric Neurology from Johns Hopkins—conducted a comprehensive toxicological and neurological analysis of the twin girls.

At two o'clock that afternoon, Dr. Vance requested a private meeting with Gabriel and Lucia in the master nursery.

The nursery was filled with soft, warm sunlight. Bella and Sophie were resting comfortably in their dual cribs, their small faces peaceful, their breathing deep and regular. Lucia was sitting in a rocking chair between the cribs, softly humming a gentle Spanish lullaby her grandmother had taught her years ago.

Gabriel stepped into the room beside Dr. Vance, who was holding a heavy blue medical folder.

"Did you find something, Dr. Vance?" Gabriel asked, his hand instinctively resting on the back of Lucia’s chair.

"We found the key to the entire tragedy, Mr. Whitmore," Dr. Vance said, his expression grave and deeply professional. "And I’m afraid Dr. Hayes’ betrayal goes much deeper than yesterday’s poisoning."

Lucia stopped humming, her eyes widening. "What do you mean, Doctor?"

Dr. Vance pulled out a series of lab reports and displayed them on his tablet.

"For the past five months, every specialist who visited this house was given a specific dietary and supplement regimen for the twins, personally designed and prepared by Dr. Hayes," Dr. Vance explained. "She claimed it was a specialized formula designed to assist with their mild premature birth."

"Yes," Gabriel nodded. "She personally delivered the custom formula tins to the kitchen every two weeks."

"We analyzed the chemical composition of that formula an hour ago," Dr. Vance said, his voice dropping into a tight tone of utter disgust. "Dr. Hayes was lacing the children's daily milk with trace amounts of a synthetic, high-potency neuro-stimulant—a compound specifically designed to induce severe, chronic central nervous system inflammation and extreme abdominal migraines."

Gabriel’s fists clenched so hard his knuckles turned white. "She was causing their pain?"

"She was manufacturing it," Dr. Vance confirmed. "In trace doses, the drug causes zero permanent physical damage, but it induces relentless, unendurable neurological pain— pain that no standard pediatric exam could diagnose. She kept those infants in state of constant agony for five months."

Lucia gasped, tears of pure horror filling her eyes as she looked down at the sleeping babies. "Why? Why would anyone do something so wicked to innocent little angels?!"

"Because as long as the babies were screaming, Gabriel needed her," Dr. Vance explained quietly. "She was positioning herself as the only medical authority who could eventually 'cure' them. She planned to slowly withdraw the stimulant over time, make it look like her new treatment was working, and emerge as the miraculous savior who saved your daughters' lives—securing her place in your life forever."

The sheer, calculated cruelty of the scheme left the room in stunned silence.

"Then... why did they stop crying when Lucia held them?" Gabriel asked, his voice shaking with a mix of awe and emotion.

Dr. Vance looked at Lucia with deep, professional respect.

"Neuro-stimulants of this type cause severe hypersensitivity to touch, light, and sound," Dr. Vance explained. "Most people—including nurses and doctors—pick up crying babies with tension, anxiety, and fast, frantic movements. That frantic energy spikes the baby's central nervous system even further."

Dr. Vance stepped closer to Lucia, looking at her worn, gentle hands.

"Lucia, when you picked up Bella three days ago, you didn't hold her like a patient. You held her against your heart with absolute, quiet stillness. Your heart rate was low, your breath was steady, and you applied a specific, firm, deep-pressure hold against her vagus nerve—a hold that natural caregivers instinctively use. That physical touch triggered a massive parasympathetic nervous system response, overriding the chemical inflammation in her brain and dropping her heart rate into a state of deep rest."

Tears streamed down Lucia’s cheeks as she looked at her hands. "I... I used to hold my baby like that... when I was losing her. I just wanted her to feel safe."

Gabriel looked down at Lucia. The cold, impenetrable wall around his heart—built over years of wealth, power, and tragic loss—shattered completely.

He realized then that the woman standing in front of him wasn't just a housekeeper who had cleaned his floors.

She was the guardian angel his family had been praying for in the dark.
