Chapter 4 - The Intruder at the Back

Every head in the church whipped around toward the entrance.

A man stood framed in the towering stone archway of the doorway. He wore a dark, impeccably tailored overcoat that smelled of rain and gunmetal, his broad shoulders blocking out the gray Boston drizzle. He was tall, striking, with sharp features, dark hair touched with silver at the temples, and eyes that swept over the five hundred gathered aristocrats with absolute, chilling indifference.

Behind him stood two massive men in dark suits, their posture radiating coiled, disciplined violence.

The silence that fell over St. Cecilia's was absolute. Even the organist, paralyzed by the sudden shift in the room's atmosphere, let his hands drop completely from the keys.

Julian Vance did not look like a wedding guest. He looked like an executioner who had walked into the wrong room and decided to audit the proceedings anyway.

Up at the altar, Margarite Ashford turned around, squinted through her lorgnette, and then — quite suddenly — all the color drained entirely from her face. Her breath hitched, her hand flying to her chest as if she had just seen a ghost walk out of the Atlantic.

"Who... who invited him?" Margarite whispered, her voice trembling so violently the words shook. "Get him out. Someone get security—"

Julian didn't move. His cold, piercing gaze cut straight through the length of the cathedral, past the rows of stunned guests, past Theodore standing red-faced in the aisle, and landed squarely on the bride.

Or, more specifically, on the jagged, shredded lace pinned into her hair.

Julian's eyes narrowed. The ambient noise of the church seemed to drop away entirely as he recognized the distinct botanical weave of the fragment resting against Cora's dark hair. The missing piece of his mother's veil.

With slow, deliberate strides, Julian began walking down the center aisle.

The guests instinctively parted before him, pressing themselves back against the wooden pews, clearing a wide, terrified path. No one dared speak. No one dared move. The mere mention of the Vance name still carried enough weight in this city to make millionaires sweat in their sleep.

Theodore dropped Cora's arm, spinning around to face the intruder, his protective, arrogant facade snapping back into place.

"Hey! This is a private ceremony!" Theodore barked, stepping forward to block Julian's path. "You can't just barge in here—do you know who my father is?"

Julian didn't even slow down. He didn't look at Theodore.

With a motion so fast and effortless it looked like choreography, Julian raised his right hand and swept the back of his palm across Theodore’s jaw with a sickening crack.

Theodore spun sideways, crashing hard against the polished wooden pew before collapsing into a crumpled heap on the floor, dazed and bleeding from a split lip.

A collective gasp shuddered through the church.

Julian stopped five feet from the altar. He stood tall, his dark coat falling open, his eyes fixed entirely on Cora Bennett, who stared back at him, her heart hammering against her ribs not from fear, but from the sudden, magnetic pull of a presence that commanded the entire room.

May you like

Julian raised a hand, pointing a single finger toward the ruined lace in her hair.

"Where," Julian asked, his voice cutting through the silent cathedral like a razor blade, "did you get that fabric?"
