Chapter 7 - The Unraveling

Claire Vance moved like a surgeon in family court.
Within twenty-four hours, Claire unearthed the medical logs from the Hayes estate's private physician, who had repeatedly been bribed to administer sedatives and falsify incident reports. Even better, Marcus, terrified of facing a ten-year prison sentence alone, turned state's evidence within six hours of interrogation. He handed over home security footage that the family thought had been erased.
The footage revealed the truth: Evelyn Hayes hosting charity dinners while Noah was locked in the basement pantry; Michael shouting at the boy for dropping a glass before Marcus violently shoved him down the rear patio stairs; Noah crawling through the garden gate in the pouring rain, dragging his broken leg while clutching his plastic bag of empty bottles.
The judge called an emergency closed-door hearing on Friday morning.

Michael sat at the defense table, his composure entirely dissolved. Evelyn looked furious, muttering under her breath as their attorneys scrambled through binders of undeniable proof.
"Your Honor," Claire stated clearly, "the custody agreement signed five years ago was obtained through coercive extortion and systemic fraud. Furthermore, the petitioner, Michael Hayes, has demonstrated catastrophic neglect and active malice."
