Chapter 6 - The Spider’s Web

The realization that Vanessa Cain’s criminal network was still active inside Cross Meridian Enterprises transformed the atmosphere of Abby’s office from a quiet audit room into a war room.
“An accomplice,” Abby repeated, the word hanging heavily in the air. “Someone with master administrative privileges. That narrows the field significantly. How many people in the entire corporation have access to cross-departmental foundation overrides?”
“Barely half a dozen,” Julian said, pacing slowly across the plush carpet. “Executive board members, the chief financial officer, the head of internal legal compliance, and senior administrative directors.”
Marcus crossed his arms, leaning against the bookshelf. “If someone inside the executive suite is still funneling money to Vanessa’s offshore shell company while she’s awaiting federal trial, they’re not just covering tracks—they’re preparing a parachute for when she jumps bail, or worse, they’re trying to buy off witnesses.”
Abby looked down at the financial ledgers spread across her desk, her mind racing. She had spent years cleaning up other people’s literal messes; now she was tasked with cleaning up corporate corruption at the highest level.
“We can’t launch an official internal IT audit through regular channels,” Abby noted, her practical instincts taking over. “If the mole has executive-level clearance, the moment we trigger a standard compliance sweep, they’ll get an automated alert and wipe their digital footprints clean before we can catch them.”
Julian stopped pacing. He looked down at Abby, a flicker of genuine admiration breaking through the dark storm cloud of his frustration.
“You’re learning fast, Abigail,” Julian murmured, a faint, appreciative smile touching his lips. “You think like an investigator, not a bureaucrat.”
“I learned how to spot people trying to hide things when I worked three jobs and had to check every receipt twice to make sure I wasn't being cheated,” Abby replied dryly.
Marcus cleared his throat. “She’s right, Mr. Cross. If we want to catch whoever is leaking these funds to V.C. Holdings, we need to set a trap. A digital decoy that looks like a routine foundation re-allocation, but contains a tracking pixel linked exclusively to our secure private server.”
Julian nodded slowly, his eyes locking onto Abby. “Can you set up the ledger entry, Abigail? Make it look like a standard administrative disbursement request originating from your new office?”
Abby swallowed hard, feeling the immense weight of the responsibility settling onto her shoulders. Just a week ago, she was wiping down coffee tables in this very building. Now, she was helping a billionaire entrap a corporate criminal.

“I can do it,” Abby said, her voice steadying. “By tomorrow morning, the decoy transfer will be live in the system.”
“Do it,” Julian commanded, his voice dropping into a lethal whisper. “And let’s see who takes the bait.”
