Chapter 7 - The Trap is Set

By 9:00 AM the following morning, the digital trap was fully operational.

Abby sat at her desk, staring calmly at her dual-monitor setup. On the primary screen, a routine budget adjustment request for a regional youth literacy program blinked innocently, glowing with all the bureaucratic mundanity of normal corporate paperwork.

But embedded deep within the metadata of the document was a silent, invisible digital tracker—a forensic beacon engineered by Marcus’s security team that would log the exact IP address, login credentials, and keystroke signature of anyone who accessed, downloaded, or modified the file.

For hours, nothing happened. The morning dragged on in tense, agonizing silence. Abby reviewed unrelated grant proposals, her heart hammering against her ribs every time her office phone rang or someone walked past her open door.

At 2:14 PM—an eerie mirror of the exact time she had stood paralyzed in front of the cash on the dresser six days prior—her computer monitor flashed a subtle, amber notification in the bottom right corner.

Access Granted.

Abby’s breath caught. She didn't touch her mouse. She didn't look up. She kept her eyes locked on the secondary monitor, which displayed the live tracking script running in the background.

Lines of code began scrolling across the screen with blinding speed.

User ID: EXEC-4092. Internal IP Address: Subnet 4 - Executive Suite. Action: File downloaded and decrypted.

Abby’s fingers flew across her keyboard, quietly routing the tracing data directly to Julian’s private terminal and Marcus’s security command center.

Target acquired, she typed into the encrypted chat window to Marcus.

Within thirty seconds, the heavy glass door of her office swung open.

Julian didn't knock. He strode into the room, his face carved from granite, holding his secure corporate tablet out in front of him.

“We have a match,” Julian said, his voice dangerously low. “The login credentials belong to the executive suite. Specifically, the office of Richard Vance—my chief financial officer.”

Abby blinked in shock. Richard Vance? Not Marcus’s relative, but a veteran corporate executive who had served on Cross Meridian’s board for over a decade, a man universally respected for his polished demeanor and unwavering loyalty to the company.

“Richard?” Abby whispered. “Are you certain? Could his credentials have been spoofed?”

“The digital fingerprint matches his personal hardware terminal,” Julian said, turning toward the door. “Come with me. We’re going to have a conversation.”
