Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

The executive conference room on the fiftieth floor was locked from the inside.

When Julian, Marcus, and Abby stepped out of the private elevator bank, Julian didn't bother knocking. He swiped his master override keycard against the electronic lock, the heavy security bolt sliding back with a sharp, metallic click.

They pushed the glass doors open and walked inside.

Richard Vance sat behind the long mahogany boardroom table, his laptop open, scrolling through a string of encrypted financial documents. When the doors opened, the veteran CFO looked up, completely unfazed—until he saw the expression carved across Julian Cross’s face.

Richard’s fingers froze on the keyboard. A micro-expression of panic flashed across his meticulously groomed face before he quickly plastered on a veneer of corporate professionalism.

“Mr. Cross,” Richard said smoothly, leaning back in his chair and adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses. “I wasn't aware you had a board meeting scheduled for this afternoon. And... Director Miller? May I ask why you are accompanying him?”

Julian walked slowly toward the table, his footsteps echoing ominously against the minimalist flooring. He didn't stop until he was standing directly across from the CFO.

“Cut the act, Richard,” Julian said, his voice devoid of any warmth. “The game is over.”

Richard raised an eyebrow, feigning innocent confusion. “I’m afraid I don't follow you, Julian. What game?”

“The game where you use your executive clearance to siphon millions of dollars from my mother’s foundation into Vanessa Cain’s offshore shell company, V.C. Holdings,” Julian snapped, slamming his tablet onto the table face-up.

The screen displayed the complete forensic log of the file download that had occurred precisely five minutes ago, cross-referenced with Richard’s private login credentials and IP address.

Richard stared at the tablet screen. The color drained entirely from his face, leaving his skin looking like parchment paper. The polished, untouchable corporate veteran evaporated in an instant, replaced by a cornered man realizing there was no escape hatch.

For a long, agonizing moment, the conference room fell into absolute silence.

Then, Richard let out a slow, bitter laugh. He shook his head, leaning back and resting his hands on the table.

“You never could see past the balance sheet, could you, Julian?” Richard spat, his voice losing its professional varnish, revealing a deep, simmering resentment. “You inherited an empire you barely knew how to run, while men like me built the infrastructure that kept this company afloat for twenty years.”

“You stole from a charitable foundation meant to fund pediatric research,” Julian growled, his hands clenching into fists at his sides. “You betrayed my trust.”

“Trust?” Richard sneered. “Corporate loyalty is a myth for fools. Vanessa and I had a mutual understanding. When she realized her marriage to you was falling apart, she needed a contingency plan—and I needed a reliable partner to help leverage foreign real-estate acquisitions outside your direct oversight. The foundation funds were just a drop in the ocean for a billionaire like you.”

Marcus stepped forward, his expression like stone, and placed a pair of heavy steel zip-ties—standard issue for elite security containment—onto the edge of the table.

“It’s over, Richard,” Marcus said coldly. “Federal marshals are already downstairs. We intercepted your encrypted backup drives ten minutes ago.”

Richard looked at the zip-ties, then up at Julian, realizing that his decades-long career had just evaporated in a matter of seconds. He didn't fight back. He simply closed his laptop, lowered his head, and extended his wrists in quiet, total defeat.
