Chapter 9 - The New FoundationTwo weeks later, the morning sun shone brightly across the manicured lawns of the newly renamed Elena Vance Community Center for Family Welfare—formerly the western wing of the Sterling estate grounds, now legally severed from the conglomerate and converted into an independent, fully funded sanctuary for single mothers and childcare workers in distress.

Elena stood on the front steps, watching a group of toddlers laughing and playing in the newly installed playground equipment near the gardens.
A pair of warm arms wrapped around her waist from behind, and a familiar chin rested gently on her shoulder.
“You’ve been staring at that swing set for twenty minutes,” Adrian murmured, his deep voice carrying a faint, teasing edge.
Elena leaned back against his chest, smiling as she placed her hands over his arms.
“I was just thinking about how fast everything can change,” she said softly. “Two weeks ago, I was holding a silver tray and running from the police. Now... I’m running a foundation.”
“You didn't run from the police, Elena,” Adrian corrected, turning her gently in his arms so she was facing him. “You ran toward the danger when everyone else stood back and watched.”
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, simple silver key, placing it into the palm of her hand.
“What’s this?” she asked, looking down at it.
“The deed to a small, quiet house in upstate New York,” Adrian said, his dark eyes softening into something warm and steady. “No gates. No security cameras. No corporate fixers. Just a front porch, a big kitchen, and a backyard big enough for a rescue dog.”
Elena looked up into his scarred, handsome face, feeling the last lingering remnants of her old life melt away completely.
“Are you offering to quit your day job as a corporate fixer?” she asked with a playful smirk.
May you like
“My day job just went out of business,” Adrian replied, a genuine, wide smile breaking across his face. “Besides, I’ve decided my new primary occupation is making sure you never have to jump into a freezing pool alone again.”
Elena laughed, wrapping her arms around his neck and pulling him close as the bright spring sun warmed the courtyard around them.
