Chapter 6 - The Gold Coast Sanctuary

Three weeks later, the physical and psychological landscape of the Falcone estate had undergone a seismic, permanent transformation.
The vultures had been purged. The disloyal capos had either fled the state or found themselves permanently retired in federal penitentiaries. The remaining syndicates across the Midwest had received a clear, unmistakable message: the King of Chicago had not only survived death, he had returned stronger, more ruthless, and entirely untouchable.
And right beside him, standing in the center of the empire, was Matilda Higgins.
She no longer wore the tight, cheap gray uniform of a basement maid.
She now occupied the luxurious private apartments on the third floor of the Gold Coast mansion—a sunlit suite of rooms featuring vaulted ceilings, floor-to-ceiling silk drapes, a massive white marble fireplace, and a mahogany writing desk overlooking the sparkling blue waters of Lake Michigan.
Her wardrobe had been entirely replaced by custom-tailored silk blouses, designer dresses, and fine cashmere sweaters that celebrated her full, beautiful figure with absolute elegance.
Yet, despite the opulence, Matilda had not changed her soul. She still insisted on managing the estate’s domestic operations, but now she did so as the supreme head of household administration, commanding the absolute, trembling respect of every servant, cook, and enforcer in the building.
On a bright Tuesday afternoon, Matilda stood by the arched window of her private suite, reviewing the catering manifests for the upcoming charity gala that the Falcone Foundation was hosting at the Navy Pier Ballroom.
The heavy mahogany double doors of her suite clicked open.
Gabriel stepped inside. He wore an immaculate charcoal three-piece suit, his dark hair cropped short, his chiseled jaw clean-shaven. He walked across the thick Persian rug, wrapped his arms around Matilda’s waist from behind, and rested his chin comfortably on her shoulder.
“You’re working too hard again,” Gabriel murmured, pressing a soft kiss against the side of her neck.
Matilda smiled, leaning back against his solid, warm chest. “I’m just reviewing the floral arrangements for Friday night, Gabriel. If I leave it to the catering agency, they’ll turn the ballroom into a funeral parlor.”
Gabriel chuckled softly, his arms tightening around her waist. “Let them. As long as you’re standing beside me in that emerald-green dress, nobody will notice the flowers.”
Matilda turned around in his arms, wrapping her hands loosely around his neck, looking up into his deep, slate-gray eyes. The cold, sterile memory of that freezing night in the underground medical wing felt like a lifetime ago.
“Sometimes I still can't believe it,” Matilda whispered, her fingers tracing the sharp line of his jaw. “The doctors said you were gone. Everyone said you were dead.”
Gabriel’s expression softened completely, the fierce, dangerous mafia king vanishing, replaced by a man utterly, fiercely devoted to the woman who had saved him.

“They were looking at monitors and data, Matilda,” Gabriel said quietly, his gaze burning into hers with absolute certainty. “They didn't know what I knew. They didn't feel what I felt.”
He leaned down, capturing her lips in a deep, tender, lingering kiss that tasted of warmth, life, and a forever that nothing in the underworld could ever tear apart.
