Chapter 8 - Whispers in the Dark

Later that night, long after the council meeting had adjourned and the estate had settled into peaceful, guarded silence, Matilda stood out on the wide stone balcony of the third-floor master suite.

The cool autumn breeze swept off Lake Michigan, rustling the leaves of the ancient oak trees lining the courtyard below. The glittering lights of the Chicago skyline twinkled against the horizon like a sea of diamonds.

Footsteps approached softly from behind.

A warm, heavy wool jacket draped over her shoulders, followed by strong arms wrapping securely around her from behind.

“You’ll catch a cold out here,” Gabriel murmured into her hair, resting his chin on her shoulder.

“I’m not cold anymore, Gabriel,” Matilda whispered softly, leaning back into his embrace, her hands reaching up to clasp his wrists. “I haven't been cold since that night in the basement.”

Gabriel turned her gently in his arms so she was facing him. The moonlight caught the sharp, aristocratic angles of his face, softening the hard edge of his reputation into something deeply tender.

“You saved my life, Matilda,” Gabriel said, his voice dropping into a low, husky register. “Not just by warming my body... but by reminding me what it actually means to be alive. Before that night, I was just a ghost running an empire of stone and blood.”

“And now?” Matilda asked softly, a playful smile touching the corner of her lips.

“Now,” Gabriel smiled, pulling her flush against his chest, “I’m just a man entirely devoted to the woman who brought me back from the dead.”

He lowered his head, pressing his lips to hers in a slow, passionate kiss that seemed to stop time itself.

Down below in the courtyard, the armed guards patrolled the perimeter in quiet, unblinking vigilance. But inside the mansion, behind the iron gates and stone walls, there was no fear left. Only strength, loyalty, and an unbreakable love born in the darkest hours of the night.
