Chapter 7 - The Syndicate Council

That evening, the grand oak-paneled boardroom on the ground floor of the estate was filled to capacity.

Seated around the massive twenty-seat mahogany conference table were the newly appointed regional capos, trusted financial directors, and legal advisors who now comprised the inner council of the Falcone syndicate.

The air was thick with the scent of high-end cigars and aged scotch.

When the heavy double doors swung open, the murmurs around the table instantly died into a reverent, absolute hush.

Gabriel Falcone walked into the room, looking every bit the undisputed emperor of Chicago. But it was the woman walking beside him that made every man at the table sit up straighter, adjust their ties, and lower their gazes in instant, respectful awe.

Matilda wore a bespoke, emerald-green silk velvet gown that hugged her curves with breathtaking elegance, a diamond-encrusted necklace glittering softly against her collarbone. She walked with the calm, unshakeable poise of a queen surveying her domain.

Gabriel pulled out the high-backed leather chair at the head of the table for her. Matilda seated herself gracefully, resting her hands on the polished wood.

Gabriel then took his seat immediately to her right, resting his arm casually along the back of her chair.

“Gentlemen,” Gabriel began, his deep baritone carrying effortlessly across the silent room. “Before we review the shipping manifests for the western docks, there is a structural reorganization of the Falcone family that needs to be made permanent.”

Several capos exchanged glances, nodding in anticipation.

“Effective immediately,” Gabriel continued, his slate-gray eyes sweeping slowly across the table, “Matilda Falcone is not only my head of domestic operations. She is an equal partner in every asset, holding, and enterprise bearing the Falcone name.”

A heavy, stunned silence hung in the room for a fraction of a second. Then, without hesitation, the senior capo—an aging, hardened veteran named Salvatore—raised his glass of scotch toward Matilda.

“To Mrs. Falcone,” Salvatore toasted respectfully. “Long may she reign.”

The entire table echoed the toast in unison, raising their glasses high. “Long may she reign.”

Matilda looked around the room, meeting the eyes of the men who had once mocked her in the shadows, seeing only absolute respect and loyalty reflected in their gazes. She offered them a calm, radiant smile, then turned her head to look at Gabriel.

Gabriel caught her gaze, his hand sliding over the mahogany table to entwine his fingers firmly with hers.
