Chapter 10 - The Dress Remade

Midnight came slowly to the city of Seattle.

The dinner had ended, the guests had departed, and the grand ballroom was once again quiet, bathed in the dim, golden glow of the recessed architectural lights.

Claire and Nathaniel walked slowly toward the floor-to-ceiling glass doors that opened onto the hotel’s private terrace overlooking the harbor. The cool night breeze smelled of saltwater, pine, and the clean Pacific rain that had washed the city clean.

Nathaniel took off his tuxedo jacket, just as he had done two weeks ago, and draped it gently around Claire’s shoulders to keep out the chill.

Claire looked down at the heavy black wool, then up at him, a soft smile playing on her lips. "This is becoming a habit."

"A habit I intend to keep for the next sixty years," Nathaniel replied, resting his hands on the terrace railing beside hers.

Beneath them, the ferries moved across Elliott Bay like glowing lanterns gliding over dark obsidian water. The skyscrapers of the city rose into the night sky, their lights blinking steadily against the stars.

"Are you happy, Claire?" Nathaniel asked quietly.

Claire looked down at the emerald brooch pinned to her new green dress. She thought about the three weeks she had spent in the shadows, auditing ledgers, watching people treat her as invisible. She thought about the moment Madison had ripped her clothes, believing that power was nothing more than the ability to make another person feel small.

And then she thought about the moment the double doors had opened, and the most powerful man in the city had walked through the crowd, not to defend his empire, but to stand beside the woman he loved.

She turned to face him, stepping close until her chest pressed against his. She reached up, resting both hands on his broad lapels, looking into the deep, unyielding Everhart gray of his eyes.

"I have never been happier," Claire said softly.

Nathaniel leaned down, his mouth finding hers in the quiet darkness of the terrace. The kiss was slow, deep, and filled with the absolute, unshakable certainty of a love that had weathered the storm and emerged completely triumphant.

When he pulled back, his forehead rested against hers, their breath mingling in the cool night air.

"No one touches my wife," Nathaniel murmured against her lips, his voice soft with a tenderness that only she would ever know.

May you like

"No one," Claire agreed, smiling into the dark. "Because she already belongs to the man who owns the world."

And high above the harbor, surrounded by the quiet hum of a city that finally knew the truth, Nathaniel and Claire stood together—unbroken, untouchable, and completely whole.
