Chapter 3 - Blood and Ledger Lines

The penthouse suite at the Four Seasons, five blocks away from the Cascade Crown, was in the middle of a total breakdown.

Glass shattered against the fireplace.

"You let him talk to me like that!" Madison shrieked, her voice bouncing off the high ceilings. She had kicked off her designer heels, her mascara smudged from furious tears that had ruined her foundation. "You stood there like a frightened little boy while that arrogant bastard threatened me! And that... that *whore* in the servant's uniform smiled at me!"

"Shut up, Madison!" Lucas roared, slamming his fists onto the mahogany dining table. "Just shut the hell up!"

He was sweating through his bespoke tuxedo shirt. His bowtie hung undone around his neck, and his hands were shaking so violently he couldn't pour the scotch from the crystal bottle without spilling it across the polished wood.

"Don't you dare yell at me!" Madison yelled back, marching toward him, her finger pointed like a weapon. "Do you know who my father is? He can run twenty segments on prime-time news exposing that whole family! We have the Vale Media Group! We can destroy them!"

Lucas looked at her as if she had suddenly grown a second head. For the first time in their eight-month relationship, the blinding veil of her beauty and social status fell away, revealing an abyss of pure, catastrophic stupidity.

"Your father," Lucas said, his voice dropping to a harsh, trembling whisper, "leases eighty percent of his television distribution bandwidth from Everhart Telecommunications. If Nathaniel Everhart cancels those contracts tomorrow, the Vale Media Group won't have enough money to broadcast a local weather report by Friday."

Madison froze, her arm slowly dropping. "What?"

"You don't understand what you did," Lucas groaned, collapsing into a chair and burying his face in his hands. "You think this is high school. You think this is some charity board drama where you can slap someone across the face and have your father write an apology check. Nathaniel doesn't write checks, Madison. He liquidates entire companies before breakfast."

"She was dressed as a waitress!" Madison defended herself, her voice pitching upward in desperate defiance. "Who does that? What kind of billionaire's wife serves champagne to guests? It's absurd! She baited me! She set me up!"

"Claire Bennett graduated summa cum laude from Wharton before she was twenty-two," Lucas said through his fingers. "She was the lead auditor for KPMG’s tech division before Nate married her. She didn't bait you, Madison. She was auditing Harbor Light because my father and I have been moving money to cover our payroll!"

The room went dead silent.

Madison stared at him, her eyes wide. "Moving money?"

Before Lucas could answer, his private phone on the table began to vibrate. The screen illuminated with a name that sent a jolt of pure terror straight through Lucas’s spine:

*JULIAN EVERHART.*

Lucas took a shaky breath, picked up the phone, and swiped the screen. He put it on speaker.

"Father," Lucas whispered.

"What did she do?"

The voice on the other end was raspy, aged, and ice-cold. Julian Everhart had spent thirty years fighting Nathaniel’s late father for control of the family empire, only to lose everything in the probate courts a decade ago. Julian had been relegated to managing minor subsidiary boards while Nathaniel took Everhart Global to international dominance.

"Father, it was an accident—"

"I have already received three calls from board members who were at the gala," Julian interrupted, his voice laced with venom. "Grant Vale called me ten minutes ago, hysterical, because the Everhart Global legal team has already served his network with an injunction halting all pending digital infrastructure renewals. Did your little socialite girlfriend truly lay hands on Nathaniel’s wife?"

Lucas closed his eyes. "Yes."

A long, suffocating silence stretched over the phone line. Madison stepped backward, terrified by the cold malice radiating from the speaker.

"Nathaniel has called an emergency executive session for eight o'clock tomorrow morning," Julian said. "He has brought the forensic audit files. Claire was in the basement archives this afternoon, Lucas. She pulled the Vectis contracts."

Lucas felt a tear of cold sweat run down his neck. "Father... the series B funding hasn't closed yet. If Nathaniel calls in our debt now, Everhart Vector is insolvent by noon tomorrow. We’ll be personally liable for the four million from Harbor Light."

"Then you had better find a way to make Nathaniel forgive you before eight o'clock," Julian hissed. "Because if that boy decides to bury us, he will not just take the company. He will put you and me in federal prison for charitable fraud. Do you understand me, Lucas?"

"Yes, Father."

"Get rid of that girl," Julian ordered coldly. "She is a liability. Throw her to the wolves if you have to. But save the family name."

The call clicked off.

Lucas stared at the dead phone screen.

Madison stood frozen in the center of the room, her lips trembling, her manicured fingers digging into her arms. "Lucas... he can't mean that. You wouldn't... we're together. I'm Grant Vale's daughter!"

Lucas slowly lifted his head. His eyes, usually bright with calculated charm, were hollow, empty, and filled with the desperate instinct of a trapped animal.

"Get out," Lucas said quietly.

"Lucas—"

"Pack your things and get out of this hotel," Lucas whispered, his voice rising in sudden, hysterical fury. "Get out of my room! Get out of my life! You just signed my death warrant over a piece of green cloth!"

Madison gasped, stepping back toward the bedroom, her face pale as a sheet.

May you like

Across town, high above the sleeping streets, the rain continued to fall against the glass of the Everhart penthouse, washing away the traces of an evening that had changed everything.
