Chapter 9 - Restoration and Truth

The Grand Ballroom of the Cascade Crown Hotel was transformed.
Gone were the tense, predatory social climbers of two weeks prior. Tonight, the Harbor Light Children’s Foundation was hosting a private dinner for the pediatric surgeons, the research scientists, the nursing directors, and the community donors who formed the true heart of the organization.
The room was filled with warm, golden light from the crystal chandeliers. Live chamber music drifted softly from the balcony, a gentle Mozart sonata that allowed conversation to flow without strain.
At the center table beneath the main chandelier sat Claire Everhart.
She wore the new dress.
It was cut from the same midnight-green Italian silk, falling in graceful, liquid folds to the floor, leaving her shoulders bare. But this time, pinned securely over her heart, was the platinum-and-emerald brooch shaped like a fluttering piece of torn fabric. The emeralds caught the light of the chandeliers, sparkling with a fierce, unmistakable green fire.
Beside her sat Nathaniel, looking completely relaxed, his arm draped affectionately over the back of her chair. He was laughing softly at a story being told by Dr. Elena Ramos, the chief of pediatric surgery.
"When Claire showed up in the basement records office last month asking to see the supply invoices," Dr. Ramos said with a grin, "I thought she was a temporary administrative temp sent by the agency. I put her to work reorganizing our surgical inventory for four hours."
Claire laughed, taking a sip of white wine. "And I reorganized it perfectly, Doctor."
"She did," Dr. Ramos agreed, looking at Nathaniel with deep respect. "Better than any hospital administrator we’ve hired in a decade. That was when I realized she wasn't some wealthy patron looking for a photo opportunity. She actually cared where every single dollar went."
"She always has," Nathaniel said softly, his fingers gently brushing the exposed skin of Claire’s shoulder. The red scratches from Madison’s ring had completely faded, leaving her skin flawless.
A hotel server approached the table, carrying a tray of dessert courses.
The server, a young woman in her early twenties wearing the standard black service jacket, looked slightly nervous as she set down the plates before the billionaire chairman and his wife.
Claire looked up, catching the young woman’s eye, and gave her a warm, genuine smile. "Thank you, Sarah. You’ve done a wonderful job managing this table tonight."
The young woman beamed, her shoulders relaxing instantly. "Thank you, Mrs. Everhart. It’s an honor to serve you."
As the server walked away, Nathaniel leaned closer to Claire, whispering into her ear. "You made her evening."
"She’s working hard to pay for nursing school," Claire murmured back, leaning her head against his shoulder. "I read the staff roster before we arrived. Everyone in this room has a name, Nate. Everyone has a story."
"Except Madison Vale," Nathaniel murmured with a faint smirk. "Whose story currently involves inventorying twenty thousand boxes of sterile surgical gloves in the hospital basement."
Claire swatted his arm playfully. "Be nice."
"I am never nice," Nathaniel said, his eyes glittering with dark humor. "I am merely fair."
Marcus Vance approached the table, bowing slightly toward Claire before handing a small leather binder to Nathaniel.
"The final filings have been completed, Nathaniel," Marcus reported quietly. "Everhart Vector has been officially rebranded as the Harbor Light Technology Trust. All ongoing licensing revenues will flow directly into the foundation’s medical research endowment in perpetuity."
Claire looked up, surprised. "All of it?"
"All of it," Nathaniel confirmed, looking at her with steady devotion. "You saved that company from Lucas’s fraud. It belongs to your foundation now."

Claire reached out under the table, finding Nathaniel’s hand and interlacing her fingers with his. His grip was warm, strong, and unshakeable.
