The sun dipped below the Chicago skyline, painting the clouds in brilliant shades of amber, violet, and gold.
Inside the grand estate, the heavy iron locks and bolted doors that had once felt like prison bars now felt like a sanctuary. The past ninety-two days of cold car seats, gas-station bathrooms, and constant terror felt like a lifetime away—a dark chapter closed forever by loyalty, sacrifice, and an unbreakable bond forged in fire.
Douglas finally drifted off to sleep, his tiny hand resting peacefully over the silver military medal, breathing softly against his uncle’s chest.
Gabriel stood beside Chalice by the wide glass doors, looking out over the sprawling estate that was now safe, unified, and secure. He reached down, taking Chalice’s hand in his free one, interlacing his fingers with hers.
