Chapter 8 - The Weight of a Name

Gabriel walked slowly toward Chalice, his fierce, intimidating aura completely melting away as he stopped just inches away from her.

He looked down at the pink bundle. Douglas was stirring slightly, letting out a soft, contented sigh in his sleep, his tiny fingers still loosely wrapped around the old silver military medal.

“He has his mother’s eyes,” Gabriel whispered, his voice trembling slightly with suppressed emotion. “I saw them when you opened the blanket downstairs. He has Isabella’s spirit, too.”

“He survived ninety-two days of hell,” Chalice said softly, tears of relief finally falling freely down her cheeks. “He’s a fighter, Mr. Holmes. Just like his parents.”

Gabriel reached out, his large, calloused hand hovering gently over the baby’s head before resting lightly on Chalice’s shoulder. The touch was warm, steady, and grounding.

“You saved him, Chalice,” Gabriel said, looking directly into her eyes with an intensity that made her breath hitch. “You gave up your life, your home, your safety, and your profession. You lived in a car through an Illinois winter just to protect my blood.”

“I couldn't let them win,” she replied simply. “Isabella trusted me in her final moments. I had to keep her promise.”

Gabriel’s expression softened into something profound and tender—an expression no one outside of this room had ever seen on the face of Chicago’s most feared mafia boss.

“A debt of blood cannot be repaid with money, Chalice,” Gabriel said, his thumb gently wiping away a tear from her cheek. “And a guardian who protects the future of the Holmes family doesn't remain a maid hiding in the shadows.”

Chalice looked up at him, her heart skipping a beat. “What happens now?”

“Now,” Gabriel said, offering a rare, genuine smile, “you come home. Not as an employee running from fear, but as family. Protected by everything I own, for the rest of our lives.”
