Chapter 7 - Reckoning at Forty Stories High

The silence in the boardroom was absolute, broken only by the rhythmic drumming of rain against the reinforced glass windows.
Viktor Vance slowly lowered his weapon, realizing that every exit was blocked by Gabriel’s armed guards. His eyes darted desperately toward the door, calculating odds that no longer existed.
“You think you’ve won, Gabriel?” Viktor sneered, a desperate, manic edge creeping into his voice. “Even if you kill us here, the syndicates across the tri-state area are already moving in. Without Antonio’s logistics network, the whole empire collapses within a week. You can't run this entire operation alone.”
“I’m not alone,” Gabriel said quietly.
He turned his head slightly toward Chalice, who stood just inside the doorway, holding Douglas with calm, unwavering strength. She met Gabriel’s gaze and gave a subtle, reassuring nod—the same steady resilience she had shown every night of their flight across Illinois.
Gabriel turned back to Viktor. “The syndicate doesn't run on fear anymore. It runs on loyalty. Something you and your brother abandoned the day you decided to sell out a mother and her child.”
With a lightning-fast motion, Gabriel drew his pistol and fired a single shot.
The bullet shattered Viktor’s weapon hand, sending his pistol clattering across the marble floor with a metallic ring. As Viktor screamed and clutched his bleeding wrist, Gabriel’s enforcers swarmed forward, pinning both Viktor and Marcus face-down against the mahogany desk.
“Lock them in the lower-level holding cells until the federal marshals arrive,” Gabriel commanded without breaking eye contact with his prisoners. “And make sure their assets are frozen down to the last penny.”
As the traitors were dragged away, kicking and screaming into the hallway, the tension in the boardroom finally began to dissipate, replaced by a heavy, profound quiet.
Arthur Sterling stepped forward, bowing his head respectfully toward Gabriel, and then casting a warm, apologetic glance at Chalice.
“Mr. Holmes,” Arthur said softly. “The board awaits your directive. The family trust is secure. The heir... is safe.”

Gabriel nodded stiffly. “Dismissed, Arthur. Leave us.”
As the board members quietly filed out of the room, closing the heavy doors behind them, only Gabriel, Chalice, and the sleeping baby remained in the sprawling penthouse office.
