Chapter 2 - Whispers Behind Mahogany Doors

The manor grew silent by mid-afternoon. Marcus had taken the carriage into town for his board meetings, leaving the cavernous estate swallowed by the damp autumn gloom.

Clara retreated to the ground-floor library under the pretense of reconciling the household expenses Evelyn had assigned to her. The library was an oppressive room lined with floor-to-ceiling mahogany bookshelves and smelling of leather, beeswax, and ancient paper. At the far end stood the master writing desk—an antique oak monstrosity that had belonged to Marcus’s grandfather.

Clara sat with the household receipts spread out before her, her fountain pen scratching methodically against the paper. But her eyes kept drifting toward the locked cabinet behind the desk.

Two days prior, Clara had entered the library unexpectedly to retrieve a book on horticulture. She had caught Evelyn standing before that very cabinet, sliding a thick velvet-bound ledger into the lower drawer with hands that actually shook. Evelyn had masked her agitation instantly, lashing out at Clara for entering without knocking, but the image of her mother-in-law’s tremor had remained burned into Clara’s memory.

*Why would a woman who controls every brick of this estate tremble over a book?*

Setting her pen down, Clara stood up. Her slippers made no sound against the Persian carpet as she walked toward the cabinet. She reached into her pocket and drew out an old brass key—one of a dozen obsolete keys left in the pantry’s spare ring, which she had quietly discovered fit the antique brass locks throughout the manor’s older furniture.

Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird.

*Click.*

The brass lock turned smoothly. Clara eased the mahogany cabinet door open. Inside were neat stacks of tax declarations, land deeds from the 1890s, and standard estate ledgers. But tucked behind a series of leather-bound tenant registries lay a heavy folio bound in dark green cloth, completely unlabelled.

Clara pulled it out.

She opened the first page. It was not a household ledger. It was a record of private, external bank transfers spanning nearly seven years—beginning shortly before Marcus’s father passed away and continuing aggressively to the present day.

Clara’s eyes scanned the figures, and her breath hitched in her throat.

Tens of thousands of pounds. Hundreds of thousands over time. Regular, staggering sums wired from the primary Vance estate trust into private offshore accounts registered under an unfamiliar entity: *The St. Claire Foundation*.

Clara traced the signature at the bottom of the authorizations. It was not the late patriarch’s signature, nor was it Marcus’s.

It was Evelyn’s maiden name: *Evelyn St. Claire*.

Every time Marcus had fretted over stalled timber profits, every time he had delayed repairing tenant cottages or modernizing the estate's machinery because "capital was tight," his own mother had been quietly draining the ancestral lifeblood of the family into dummy corporations held under her sole control.

"What are you doing at that desk?"

Clara gasped, dropping the ledger onto the blotter.

Evelyn stood in the doorway of the library, her silhouette framed by the dim light of the corridor. Her face was an unreadable mask of cold stone, but her pale eyes burned with an icy fury that chilled Clara to the marrow.
