Chapter 7 - Thunder Over the Courtyard

The rain was an unceasing deluge, roaring off the slate roofs of Vance Manor and turning the cobblestone courtyard into a churn of mud and splashing puddles. Lightning tore across the purple-black sky, carving jagged fissures of blinding light through the darkness.

Clara stood by the steps of the carriage, soaked to the skin, shivering uncontrollably. In her hands, pressed tight against her ribs beneath her sodden shawl, was the leather folio of true bank records.

Evelyn marched forward, her face twisted into a mask of righteous fury and calculated terror. She pointed an accusatory, trembling finger at Clara, turning back toward Marcus with theatrical despair.

"Look at her, Marcus! Look at what she was doing while you slept!" Evelyn cried out, her voice cutting sharp through the rumble of distant thunder.

Marcus stopped in the middle of the courtyard, the rain drenching his linen shirt, his chest heaving. His eyes darted from his mother to the hitched carriage, then to the open luggage rack bearing the silver chest, and finally to Clara.

"Clara..." Marcus’s voice broke with agony, disbelief, and betrayal. "What is this? Why is the carriage hitched? Why are you out here?"

"Marcus, please, listen to me!" Clara yelled over the howling wind, taking a step toward him. "It’s not what she’s telling you! You have to listen!"

"Stay back!" Evelyn shrieked, stepping directly between them, her velvet cloak flaring like the wings of a predatory raven. "Do not let her poison your mind any further, Marcus! She has taken the family jewels! She had the groom prepare the horses before midnight! She was abandoning you, Marcus! She was running away with our heritage!"

"That is a lie!" Clara screamed, her voice hoarse from the cold and desperation. "Marcus, look at me! Look into my eyes! Have I ever lied to you? Have I ever hidden anything from you?"

Marcus looked utterly shattered. His hands clenched into white-knuckled fists at his sides. He looked at the family carriage, loaded and ready for travel. He looked at the mother who had raised him, sobbing with theatrical indignation in the storm.

"Why, Clara?" Marcus choked out, taking a trembling step backward. "Were you really going to leave? In the middle of the night? Without a word?"

"No! I was trying to save you!" Clara shouted.

"She was robbing us!" Evelyn interrupted savagely, her voice rising to a frantic pitch as she sensed Marcus’s hesitation. "I caught her ransacking the safe in my study! She smashed the heirlooms! And now she stands by that carriage, ready to tear this family apart!"

Clara saw the doubt hardening in Marcus's eyes. The invisible walls of his mother's lifelong conditioning were closing around him, suffocating his trust in his wife.

If Clara did not break through his blindness now, in this very second, the lie would solidify into permanence.

She took a decisive, fearless step away from the carriage, straight toward the matriarch.
