Chapter 4 - The Sealed Vault

For three hours, Clara remained locked inside the library. When the housemaid finally unlocked the door under the guise of lighting the evening lamps, acting astonished to find Clara inside, Clara knew the woman had been instructed by Evelyn.

Evelyn was testing her boundaries, measuring Clara’s willingness to fight or flee.

Marcus returned late that night, drenched from the rain that had begun to lash against the countryside. At dinner, the silence in the grand dining room was suffocating. Evelyn sat at the head, effortlessly recounting trivial gossip from the village vicarage, while Marcus ate mechanically, rubbing his temples in exhaustion.

"The timber union is demanding a fifteen percent wage increase," Marcus muttered, staring down at his untouched roast beef. "If we grant it, the sawmill operates at a net loss for the next two quarters. If we refuse, they strike. Mother, are you certain we cannot liquidate a portion of the secondary reserves? Just enough to stabilize the workers until spring?"

Clara looked up from her plate, her heart seizing. Her gaze met Evelyn’s across the expanse of polished mahogany and silver candelabras.

Evelyn took a deliberate sip of her wine. "I told you this morning, Marcus. The market is volatile. Withdrawing funds now would incur massive penalties. We must tighten our belts and hold the line. You must show strength, not weakness."

"Strength doesn't feed their families, Mother," Marcus said with quiet misery.

Clara parted her lips. *Tell him,* her inner voice screamed. *Tell him right now, before her eyes, and tear down the illusion.*

Yet Evelyn’s cold, triumphant gaze held her. Clara knew that without physical proof in Marcus's hands, Evelyn would spin the revelation into an outrageous slander. She would claim Clara was trying to drive a wedge between mother and son, or worse, that Clara had suffered a nervous breakdown. Evelyn was an artist of manipulation, and Marcus had spent thirty years admiring her canvas.

*I need the documents,* Clara thought. *Not just a glimpse of them. I need the certified bank records, the transfer receipts, and the proof of the St. Claire Foundation.*

Late that night, after Marcus had fallen into a deep, exhausted sleep beside her, Clara slipped out of bed.

She dressed in a dark wool dress and crept down the servants' stairs. She knew Evelyn’s private study was locked, but she also knew the layout of the old wing. Adjoining Evelyn’s study was an old conservatory, connected by a set of French doors with an aging, rusted latch.

The storm raged outside, rain drumming violently against the glass panes of the conservatory. Shivering against the damp chill, Clara wedged a small silver hairpin into the antique latch of the French doors. With a faint groan of iron and wood, the bolt gave way.

Clara stepped into Evelyn’s sanctuary.

The room smelled of lavender water, bitter almond ink, and damp wool. On the large mahogany bureau sat a locked traveling lockbox. Next to it lay a stack of freshly stamped official documents.

Clara struck a match, shielding the flame with her hand, and lit a small beeswax taper. She leaned over the desk.

Her hands moved feverishly. These were not old ledgers. These were fresh withdrawal authorizations prepared for the upcoming Monday. Evelyn was preparing to liquidate another fifty thousand pounds from the primary estate account, leaving the family’s operational accounts completely gutted.

Beneath the authorizations lay a formal request to transfer the estate’s underlying land deeds to a private offshore trust in Evelyn's name alone.

Evelyn wasn't just hoarding wealth. She was systematically preparing to strip Marcus of his entire inheritance, leaving him holding an empty shell of debts while she retained absolute control of the fortune in private safety.

Clara gathered the transfer orders, the St. Claire registry, and the bank statement ledgers, binding them tightly in a thick leather portfolio.

As she tucked them under her arm, the floorboard behind her creaked.
