Chapter 8 - The Hearing

The federal courtroom was dim, smelling of old wood, floor wax, and collective tension.

I sat quietly in the back row of the gallery, wearing a tailored charcoal coat, my hands resting calmly in my lap. Up front, standing before the federal judge in a standard orange jumpsuit that swallowed his once-broad shoulders, stood Julian Vance.

His hair was unstyled, his face gaunt, and his posture—once so rigid and commanding at high-society galas—was noticeably slouched. He didn't look like a titan of industry or a pillar of the philanthropic community anymore. He looked like what he had always been underneath the custom suits and forged signatures: a small man who had built his entire existence on stolen credit.

The judge’s voice echoed coldly through the wood-paneled room.

“Mr. Vance, your systematic execution of corporate fraud, identity forgery, and asset embezzlement over a multi-year period has caused catastrophic damage not only to your primary partners, but to the integrity of our financial institutions. The court finds no grounds for leniency.”

Julian swallowed hard, his eyes darting frantically toward the gallery. For a brief, pathetic second, his gaze locked onto mine across the room. There was no arrogance left in his eyes—only a desperate, pleading terror, as if he expected me to stand up, object, and save him from the consequence of his own actions.

I didn't move a muscle. I didn't blink. I simply stared back at him with absolute, unblinking neutrality.

The judge banged his gavel with a sharp, echoing crack.

“I sentence you to eight years in federal custody, with no possibility of parole for the first five. Court is adjourned.”

As the bailiffs stepped forward to escort Julian away, his shoulders slumped entirely. He didn't look back again. He was led through the side doors, vanishing into the gray subterranean corridors of the courthouse, leaving behind a silence that felt completely clean.
