Chapter 9 - Rebuilding from the Ground Up

The completion ceremony for the municipal cultural arts center downtown arrived on a brilliant, crisp spring morning.

The plaza surrounding the newly erected steel-and-glass structure was packed with city officials, journalists, construction workers, and local residents admiring the clean lines and soaring open-air atrium.

I stood on the podium alongside the mayor and the lead structural engineers, wearing a classic white blazer and holding the ceremonial ribbon-cutting shears.

When the local news cameras zoomed in, capturing the bright flashbulbs and the enthusiastic applause of the crowd, I didn't look down. I looked straight into the lens, knowing that across the state, inside the common room of a federal penitentiary, a television screen might be broadcasting the exact same feed. Let them see. Let everyone see what a woman looks like when she builds her own life instead of letting others demolish it.

Marcus stepped up beside me on the platform as the ribbon snapped in half to thunderous applause, handing me a small, perfectly wrapped bouquet of white lilies.

“Architectural masterpiece,” Marcus murmured with a approving nod, surveying the soaring glass facade. “Not a single structural flaw anywhere in the Blueprint.”

“Because we didn't rush the foundation,” I replied, taking the lilies and breathing in their fresh, clean scent.
