Chapter 8 - The Verdict

By the time my son was two months old, the legal proceedings against Richard Vance reached their inevitable conclusion in the federal district court downtown.

The trial lasted precisely four days.

The defense attempted to argue that the audio logs were manipulated, but HayesTech’s independent cyber-forensic experts—backed by federal digital examiners—shredded their claims within twenty minutes of cross-examination.

When the jury returned with their verdict, the foreman read it out with grim, unyielding clarity.

“Guilty on all counts: Premeditated Attempted Murder, Conspiracy to Commit Fraud, and Interstate Financial Embezzlement.”

Judge Robert Sterling—a federal jurist with a reputation for absolute severity—didn't blink when he handed down the sentence.

“Mr. Vance, you attempted to murder your wife and engineer the theft of a multi-billion-dollar enterprise out of pure, unbridled greed,” Judge Sterling stated, his voice echoing off the vaulted marble ceiling of the courtroom. “You abused a sacred trust and weaponized the law against someone who trusted you. For these crimes, this court sentences you to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, to be served at the United States Penitentiary, Florence ADX.”

The gavel came down with a sharp, echoing crack that sounded like a gunshot.

Bang.

Richard didn't scream this time. He didn't curse or thrash. As the federal marshals grabbed him by the shoulders and hauled him away in chains, he simply stared blankly at the floor, realizing at last the full, crushing weight of the trap he had walked into.

I sat in the front row of the gallery, watching him disappear through the heavy wooden doors.

There was no sense of victory or elation. Just a profound, quiet sense of completion. The chapter was closed. The parasite had been purged from the system.
