Chapter 6 - Jurisdictional Checkmate

Back at St. Jude Memorial, the glass doors of the main lobby slid open with a sharp mechanical hiss, admitting Sheriff Arthur Douglas and four of his uniformed deputies.

Douglas was fifty-eight years old, carried an extra fifty pounds around his midsection, and wore his Stetson hat tilted back with the easy arrogance of a man who hadn't had his authority questioned in twenty-five years.

"Where is she?" Douglas barked at the terrified triage nurse behind the desk. "I’m told someone assaulted two of my officers on the fifth floor."

"She's right here, Sheriff."

Douglas spun around.

Standing near the lobby coffee kiosk was Nia Scott. She had removed her tactical jacket, wearing a simple black long-sleeve shirt that accentuated her lean, athletic frame. Behind her, leaning casually against the information desk, was Jax. Sitting in one of the lobby chairs, typing lazily on her laptop, was Sarah.

Douglas sneered, adjusting his gun belt. "Nia Scott. I should have known. You always were trouble, even when you were dragging Ryan through divorce court. You think because you wear a uniform overseas, you can come into my county and lay hands on my deputies?"

Nia didn't move. She held a paper cup of black coffee in one hand.

"Sheriff Douglas," Nia said, her voice conversational. "You signed an incident report at 4:15 PM yesterday stating that my daughter fell off a garden trellis."

Douglas’s eyes narrowed. "That’s what the investigation concluded. Now, you’re going to turn around, put your hands behind your back, and—"

"Sarah," Nia said quietly.

Sarah tapped a single key on her laptop.

The large, wall-mounted flat-screen television above the triage desk—normally reserved for hospital announcements and local news—flickered.

Suddenly, the screen illuminated with high-definition digital audio waveforms, accompanied by crystal-clear, horrifying sound that blasted through the lobby’s commercial speakers at maximum volume.

*“Say it, you little bitch! Say she abandoned you!”*

The unmistakable, cultured voice of Tessa Sterling echoed through the entire lobby.

Then came the metallic, resonant *CLANG* of the iron rebar striking bone, followed by Elise’s ear-piercing, agonized scream.

*“Hold her left arm flatter, Morgan! She’s wriggling!”*

The deputies behind Douglas froze. Their faces turned gray. The triage nurse gasped, covering her mouth with both hands, tears instantly flooding her eyes.

Douglas flinched as if he had been struck with an electric prod. "Turn that off! What the hell is that?"

"That is federal evidence, Arthur," Sarah said from her chair, not looking up from her screen. "Recorded on an encrypted cloud device belonging to Elise Sterling. Synced at 3:42 PM yesterday afternoon. Exactly thirty-three minutes before you arrived at Briarcrest Manor to accept an envelope containing fifteen thousand dollars in cash from Tessa Sterling’s personal safe."

Douglas went entirely white. "That's a lie. That's... that's an illegal wiretap!"

"Title 18, United States Code, Section 2381 and Section 1512," Nia said, taking a slow step toward the sheriff. With every step she took, the bloated man instinctively leaned backward. "Aggravated assault resulting in severe bodily harm to a dependent of active-duty military personnel deployed in a designated combat theater. Under the Military Personnel Protection Act, signed into federal law three years ago, that makes this a federal capital offense."

She stopped three inches from Douglas’s face.

"You aren't dealing with a family court matter anymore, Arthur," Nia murmured, her voice carrying a frequency that made the hair on the back of his neck stand up. "You are dealing with an active federal terrorism and treason nexus. Your bank accounts in Richmond and the Cayman Islands were frozen fourteen minutes ago by the Department of the Treasury."

Douglas’s hand twitched toward his holster.

Before his fingers could even touch the leather, Jax’s hand shot out like a striking viper.

He didn't just grab Douglas’s hand; he seized the sheriff's thumb, twisted it outward with a sickening *POP*, and stripped the heavy service revolver cleanly from the holster, clearing the chamber and dropping the magazine onto the linoleum floor in a single, fluid motion that took less than one second.

Douglas shrieked in pain, dropping to his knees, clutching his dislocated thumb.

The four young deputies behind him drew their weapons halfway, but Sarah didn't even look up as she spoke:

"Federal warrants have just been transmitted to the Virginia State Police barracks in Salem. Colonel Henderson and two tactical squads of State Troopers are currently en route to Briarcrest Manor. If you pull those weapons, you will be processed as armed combatants interfering with a Department of Defense extraction."

The four deputies looked at each other.

Then, slowly, deliberately, the lead deputy clicked his holster shut and took two steps backward. The other three followed immediately.

"Smart boys," Jax grunted, tossing Douglas’s unloaded revolver onto the triage counter.

Nia looked down at the whimpering sheriff.

"Tell your dispatch to clear the roads between here and the ridge," Nia said. "If I see a single county cruiser within two miles of Briarcrest Manor, I won't hand you over to the State Police. I will let Jax handle your processing."

She turned on her heel and walked toward the glass exit.

"Team," Nia commanded over her comms link. "Mount up. Time to collect the debt."
