Chapter 8 - The Manor on the Bluff

The contrast between the two worlds was total.
Tessa stood beneath a five-hundred-pound crystal chandelier, still wearing her bespoke silk robe, her face frozen in an expression of sheer, disbelieving horror. Beside her, Morgan was shaking violently, clutching a gold-plated snub-nosed revolver with both hands, her knuckles bone-white.
Down below in the foyer, illuminated by the tactical weapon-lights of three heavily armed combat operators, stood Nia Scott.
She was not the exhausted, broken woman they had anticipated. She looked like an angel of death carved from carbon fiber and steel.
"Drop the weapon, Morgan," Nia said. Her voice was not loud, but it echoed off the marble walls with the weight of an absolute command.
"Get out of my house!" Morgan shrieked, her voice cracking into hysteria. "You get out of here, you bitch! We have the police! Arthur is coming! Blackwood, shoot them!"
"Your Blackwood contractors are face-down in your driveway," Nia said, taking the first step up the marble stairs. "And Arthur Douglas is currently sitting on the floor of St. Jude Hospital with a dislocated thumb, waiting for the State Police to read him his rights."
Tessa’s face twisted into an ugly, aristocratic mask of rage. She grabbed Morgan’s arm, trying to push her forward. "Shoot her, Morgan! She’s trespassing! Shoot her!"
Morgan raised the revolver, her hands trembling so hard the barrel danced in wild circles.
*THWACK.*
A single non-lethal rubber-composite round, fired with pinpoint accuracy from Jax’s carbine, struck Morgan’s right wrist.
The golden revolver flew from her grip, clattering down the marble steps. Morgan screamed, clutching her bruised arm, and collapsed onto the plush oriental stair runner, sobbing in agony.
Tessa stepped back, her arrogance finally cracking, revealing the hollow, cowardly core underneath.
"You can't touch me," Tessa hissed, retreating toward the upper landing. "Do you know who my family is? My great-grandfather built this county! Every judge in this state has dinner at this table! You are an enlistee! You are nothing!"
Nia reached the top of the stairs.
She didn't raise her rifle. She slung it across her chest, stepped into Tessa’s space, and slapped her.
The impact was not an emotional outburst; it was a calibrated, bone-jarring strike delivered with the full weight of Nia’s combat-hardened shoulder behind it.
Tessa flew sideways, her head slamming into the gilded wainscoting before she collapsed onto the parquet floor, her perfect chignon coming undone, blood pooling from her split lip onto her silk robe.
"That," Nia whispered, standing over her, "was for Elise’s ribs."
Tessa groaned, looking up with eyes filled with genuine, animal terror for the first time in her pampered life. "Nia... please. We have money. We can give you the trust fund. Thirty-five million dollars. Take it all! Just let us leave!"
"The trust fund is already Elise's," Nia said, pulling a set of heavy steel cuffs from her tactical vest. "And you aren't leaving. You're going to a place where silk doesn't exist, Tessa. Where the women you share a shower with don't care about your great-grandfather."
From the end of the hall, Ryan slowly stepped out of the master bedroom, his hands raised high in the air, his face wet with tears.
"I didn't touch her, Nia," Ryan sobbed, dropping to his knees. "I swear to God, I never laid a finger on Elise! It was them! I’ll testify! I’ll tell the prosecutors everything!"
Tessa turned her head, spitting blood onto the floor, glaring at her brother with venomous hatred. "You cowardly piece of garbage!"
"Quiet," Nia said.
She pulled Tessa’s hands behind her back, ratcheting the steel cuffs down until they clicked into the bone. Then she turned and did the exact same thing to Morgan, who was curled into a fetal position, weeping uncontrollably.
Outside, the faint wail of multiple sirens began to echo through the valley.

The Virginia State Police tactical units had finally arrived.
