Chapter 8 - THE SHATTERED MIRROR (CHAPTER 8 IN SEQUENCE)

The silence inside the moving vehicle was heavier than lead.

Elizabeth couldn’t look at him. She stared down at her lap, her fingers clawing into the fabric of her coat as the reality of her worst nightmare closed in around her.

“How far along?” Alessandro asked, his voice uncharacteristically rough, laced with a strange mixture of awe and terrifying possessiveness.

“Six weeks,” she whispered, admitting defeat because lying was no longer an option.

Alessandro closed his eyes, leaning his head back against the leather headrest, letting out a long, ragged breath that sounded like a man who had just won a war he wasn’t sure he’d survive. When he opened his eyes again, the coldness was entirely gone, replaced by a fierce, blazing intensity.

“You tried to run from me because of this,” he said, not with anger, but with profound understanding. “You were terrified I’d take the child away from you.”

“Wouldn’t you?” Elizabeth finally looked up, her dark eyes flashing with defensive fire through her tears. “You’re Alessandro Vitali! Men in your position don’t share custody with a broke diner waitress who hides behind fake names! You’d sue me into oblivion, lock me out of the penthouse, and raise my baby as a corporate trophy!”

Alessandro flinched as if she had struck him across the face.

He reached out, grabbing her shoulders with gentle, immovable firmness, forcing her to look straight into his eyes.

“Listen to me, Elizabeth,” Alessandro commanded, every word ringing with absolute, unbreakable sincerity. “I have spent my entire life surrounded by people who view relationships as transactions. I thought love and family were weaknesses to be exploited. But the moment I held you in that hotel room—and now, knowing you are carrying my child—you aren't a transaction to me. You are my anchor.”

“Alessandro—”

“No. Hear me out,” he interrupted softly, his thumb tracing her cheekbone. “I am not my father. I will never let anyone hurt you, and I will never take my child away from his mother. But I am not letting you walk out of my life, either. You and the baby are coming home with me. Tonight.”

Elizabeth’s heart hammered against her ribs. Every instinct screamed that surrendering to him was a trap—that giving her heart to a billionaire was a slow form of suicide. But looking into his amber eyes, seeing the raw, terrifying depth of devotion reflected there, she realized she had already lost the war.

She loved him. And she was carrying his child.

“Okay,” she whispered, a single tear slipping down her cheek. “I’ll come.”
