Chapter 9 - THE ULTIMATE BETRAYAL (CHAPTER 9 IN SEQUENCE)

Three months later, the penthouse on the sixtieth floor had been completely transformed.
It no longer felt like a cold, sterile corporate fortress. Nurseries had been built, soft cashmere blankets draped over the designer sofas, and the air was filled with the quiet, domestic warmth Elizabeth had spent her whole life dreaming of.
Alessandro had kept every promise. He had showered her not with cold cash, but with patient, relentless devotion—learning how to cook her favorite comfort foods, attending every prenatal checkup with the grim, protective focus of a general guarding a frontline, and holding her through the morning sickness that lingered into her second trimester.
They were happy. Terrifyingly, perfectly happy.
Which made what happened next all the more devastating.
It was a Tuesday afternoon when Alessandro was away at a high-level board meeting downtown. Elizabeth was resting in the living room, reading a nursing textbook, when the private elevator chimed.
Ding.
She assumed it was the housekeeper or a delivery. But when the doors slid open, it wasn't staff.
It was Marcus Vance—Alessandro’s ruthless, long-serving chief legal counsel and corporate fixer. Marcus looked older, greyer, and wore an expression of grim, chilling determination.
“Miss Miller,” Marcus nodded politely, stepping into the penthouse without an invitation.
Elizabeth stood up, her hand instinctively resting over her rounded five-month belly. “Mr. Vance? What are you doing here? Alessandro is at the office.”
“I know where Mr. Vitali is,” Marcus replied smoothly, pulling a thick manila envelope from his briefcase. “In fact, he doesn't know I’m here. This is a private matter.”
“What matter?” Elizabeth asked, her throat tightening with sudden unease.
Marcus walked over to the coffee table and dropped the envelope onto the glass surface. He pulled out a single document and slid it toward her.
Elizabeth looked down. It was a legal guardianship waiver and a confidentiality agreement drafted by Vitali Holdings’ primary legal team.
“Mr. Vitali’s public image is immaculate,” Marcus began in a cold, professional tone. “A child out of wedlock with a former diner waitress carrying the baggage of the Miller family scandal... it’s a PR nightmare waiting to explode. Vitali Holdings’ board of directors has reviewed the situation.”
Elizabeth’s blood turned to ice water. “The... the board?”
“Mr. Vitali is young, and frankly, temporarily blinded by emotional sentiment,” Marcus continued mercilessly. “Once the child is born, full custody will be transferred to a designated trust managed by the board. You will be generously compensated—ten million dollars, tax-free, deposited into an offshore account of your choice—provided you sign a non-disclosure agreement and permanently relocate out of the country.”
Elizabeth stared at the lawyer, the room spinning around her.
Ten million dollars. Sign away my baby. Disappear.
“No,” she whispered, her voice shaking with rage. “Alessandro would never... he told me—he swore to me—”
“Mr. Vitali is a visionary, Miss Miller, but he is also a pragmatist,” Marcus said smoothly, picking up his briefcase. “He will come around once he sees it’s what’s best for the dynasty. I suggest you sign the papers before he returns. It will save everyone a great deal of unpleasantness.”
Marcus turned around and walked back into the elevator, leaving Elizabeth standing alone in the center of the sunlit living room with the papers of her destruction resting on the glass table.
When Alessandro walked through the penthouse doors two hours later, loosening his tie and calling her name with a tired, loving smile, he found Elizabeth standing by the floor-to-ceiling glass window, staring out at the Chicago skyline with eyes as dead and cold as winter stone.
“El?” Alessandro asked, his smile faltering instantly as he saw the manila envelope on the table and the devastated look on her face. “What’s wrong?”
Elizabeth turned around slowly, holding the legal waiver in her trembling hand.
“You had your lawyer draw this up behind my back,” she said, her voice shaking with a quiet, devastating fury.
Alessandro stared at the papers, and color drained entirely from his face. “Elizabeth... where did you get those?”
“Don’t lie to me!” she screamed, bursting into tears as the weight of the betrayal crushed her chest. “You told me you loved me! You told me you would never take my baby away! But the moment your back was turned, your corporate board sent your hitman to buy me off and steal my child!”
“I didn't authorize this!” Alessandro roared, rushing forward, his amber eyes wide with panic and absolute terror as he reached out for her. “El, I swear to God on my brother’s grave, I knew nothing about this! Marcus acted on his own initiative!”
“Stay away from me!” she sobbed, stepping back, clutching her belly protectively. “I trusted you, Alessandro. I gave you everything. And you’re just a Vitali after all. A monster in a tailored suit.”

Before Alessandro could speak another word, Elizabeth bolted past him toward the private elevator, punched the call button, and slammed the door shut before he could reach her.
She was running again. But this time, she had nowhere left to hide.
