Chapter 5 - Chemical Proof

The townhouse was as quiet as a crypt.

Beside me, Nicholas was dead to the world, sleeping on his stomach, his face turned toward the window.

I slid out from beneath the duvet millimeter by millimeter. I didn't wear slippers; bare feet on cold hardwood were silent. I avoided the loose floorboard three inches from the edge of the bed—a flaw in the joinery I had cataloged two years ago during the master bedroom renovation.

I glided across the rug toward the dresser.

The moonlight illuminated Nicholas’s keychain.

I didn't pick up the entire ring; the brass keys would clink against the metal fob. Instead, I carefully manipulated the split-ring with my fingernails, easing the sleek, matte-black USB drive off the wire loop without making a sound.

I slipped the drive into the waistband of my leggings.

Then, I slipped out of the bedroom, leaving the door a hairsbreadth open, and crept down the grand staircase.

Julian’s nursery was quiet. Nurse Brenda was sleeping in the adjoining guest suite down the hall; I could hear the faint, rhythmic rumble of her snoring through the drywall.

I bypassed the nursery and slipped into the ground-floor study.

I didn't turn on the overhead lights. I used the faint, blue glow of my phone screen to navigate.

I moved behind Nicholas’s massive mahogany desk. I knelt on the floor, rolled back the edge of the heavy Persian rug, and exposed the flush brass plate set into the white oak floorboards.

I lifted the cover.

Inside was a high-security biometric and digital safe. Beside the keypad was a recessed USB port.

I took the black drive from my waistband and plugged it into the port.

The safe’s digital screen illuminated with a sharp, green glow: *OVERRIDE TOKEN DETECTED. ENTER MASTER PIN.*

My heart skipped a beat.

The USB wasn't an automatic key; it was a dual-factor authenticator. It still required a PIN.

I stared at the blinking cursor. Six digits again?

I tried 1-0-1-4-2-1—the firm’s takeover date.

The screen flashed red: *INVALID PIN. TWO ATTEMPTS REMAINING BEFORE LOCKOUT ALARM.*

A cold sweat broke out across the back of my neck. If the lockout alarm triggered, a silent signal would be sent to Nicholas’s smartphone on the bedside table upstairs, waking him instantly.

I had two tries.

What else mattered to Nicholas? What other date defined his ego?

Not Julian’s birth. Nicholas had arrived three hours late to the delivery room because he had been finalizing an equity purchase in Canary Wharf.

Canary Wharf.

The purchase of his first residential tower—the building that made him a partner.

No. That was business. Nicholas’s deepest, darkest vanity wasn't his business; it was his lineage. He bragged constantly about his ancestry, about his grandfather who had founded the Hastings Trust.

What was the trust registration number?

I had seen it on his private letterhead dozens of times while proofreading his personal correspondence.

*HT-080974.*

August 9th, 1974. The day the trust was created.

0-8-0-9-7-4.

My trembling thumb hovered over the brass keys.

*Click. Click. Click. Click. Click. Click.*

The screen held for three agonizing seconds.

Then, a soft, mechanical hum vibrated beneath my knees. The safe’s heavy motorized bolts slid back.

*ACCESS GRANTED.*

I pulled the safe door upward.

Inside sat a stack of bearer bonds, two passports (one British, one Maltese), a velvet pouch of uncut diamonds, and his private, encrypted Lenovo laptop.

Beside the laptop was a slim, black leather-bound ledger.

I didn't touch the laptop; turning it on would leave a login timestamp. I picked up the ledger and opened it beneath my phone’s flashlight.

It wasn't a diary. It was a private, un-audited ledger of offshore consulting disbursements.

I flipped through the pages until I reached the entries for the last three months.

My breath stopped.

*September 12th: Tranche 1 - Harley Clinical Research Ltd (Beneficiary: A. Sterling) - £150,000 (Source: Cayman Alpha Holding).*

*October 15th: Tranche 2 - Harley Clinical Research Ltd (Beneficiary: A. Sterling) - £150,000 (Source: Cayman Alpha Holding).*

*November 8th: Final Tranche - Harley Clinical Research Ltd (Beneficiary: A. Sterling) - £200,000 (Source: Cayman Alpha Holding - Pending Final Custody Disposition).*

Half a million pounds.

Nicholas had paid Dr. Althea Sterling five hundred thousand pounds through a Cayman shell company to fabricate my psychiatric records and chemically induce my madness.

And right beneath the entry was a handwritten note in Nicholas’s distinct, angular script:

*“Contingent on successful ex parte commitment order by Nov 17. Final disbursement upon transfer of infant Julian to Hastings primary residential care.”*

It was a contract. A literal, handwritten hit-contract on my sanity and my child.

I pulled out my phone and photographed every single page of the ledger. I captured the account numbers, the routing codes, the dates, and Nicholas’s signature authorizing the Cayman transfers.

I closed the ledger. I returned it to the safe. I closed the heavy brass door and waited until the motorized deadbolts locked into place.

I unplugged the USB drive. I smoothed the Persian rug back over the brass plate.

My phone vibrated in my pocket.

It was an email notification from an encrypted address.

*Subject: TOXICOLOGY RESULTS - URGENT.*

I opened the attachment. It was an official laboratory analysis from the Department of Forensic Toxicology at King’s College London.

*SAMPLE IDENTIFICATION: Compound Capsules A, B, C.*

*CHEMICAL COMPOSITION:*

*1. Haloperidol (High-potency first-generation antipsychotic) - 15mg per unit.*

*2. Fluphenazine (Long-acting neuroleptic) - 10mg per unit.*

*3. Lorazepam (High-potency benzodiazepine) - 4mg per unit.*

*CLINICAL ASSESSMENT:*

*The identified mixture represents a severe, non-therapeutic neuroleptic cocktail. Administration of this compound to an unmedicated, non-psychotic individual will induce acute akathisia, profound cognitive disorientation, extrapyramidal motor tremors, severe memory impairment, and drug-induced dissociative hallucinations within 72 to 96 hours of continuous dosing. In toxic plasma concentrations, this combination mimics the clinical diagnostic criteria for florid acute postpartum psychosis with manic features.*

*CONCLUSION: This compound is non-standard, custom-manufactured, and poses an immediate risk of permanent neurological damage or fatal respiratory depression.*

I stood in the dark study, clutching the phone against my ribs.

They weren't just drugging me.

They were giving me doses high enough to risk killing me.

If my heart had given out during one of those terrifying nighttime panic attacks, Nicholas would have wept at my funeral, held Julian in front of the television cameras, and inherited my entire estate while playing the grieving, tragic widower.

A floorboard creaked above my head.

Someone was walking in the master bedroom.

May you like

Nicholas was awake.
