Chapter 8 - The Longest Night

I sprinted out of the study, slammed the heavy oak door behind me, and threw the external brass deadbolt—the lock Nicholas had installed to trap me—trapping Nicholas, Dr. Sterling, and the screaming nurse inside the room.
The heavy wood shuddered violently as Nicholas slammed his full body weight against it.
“Sophie!” he screamed, his voice muffled by the thick oak, vibrating with unhinged, homicidal rage. “Open this door! Open this goddamn door right now!”
I didn't answer.
I raced up the stairs to the nursery.
Julian was awake, startled by the screaming downstairs, crying in his crib.
I scooped him into my arms, wrapping him tightly in his thick woolen travel blanket. I snatched my passport, his birth certificate, and my emergency cash envelope from the hidden compartment in my old drafting kit under the nursery floorboards.
Behind me, the downstairs oak door gave a violent, splintering crack.
Nicholas was using the heavy brass fire poker from the hearth.
*I can’t leave through the front door,* I realized in a flash of cold clarity. *Dr. Sterling’s private medical transport van is parked in the driveway. The driver is outside.*
If I ran out the front gate with Julian in my arms, the driver would intercept me on the pavement. Nicholas would break through the study door within thirty seconds, and they would pin me to the sidewalk before I could reach the end of the block.
I had to hold the ground until dawn.
I carried Julian into the master bedroom.
I locked the heavy door. I dragged the massive mahogany armoire across the hardwood floor, straining until the tendons in my neck felt ready to snap, jamming the heavy furniture directly beneath the brass doorknob.
Then I grabbed the antique wrought-iron floor lamp and wedged it against the window leading to the terrace.
Below, the study door splintered open with a thunderous crash.
Heavy, violent footsteps tore up the grand staircase.
“Sophie!” Nicholas roared. He hit the bedroom door like a freight train.
The heavy wood groaned, but the armoire held firm.
“You’re finished, Sophie!” Nicholas slammed against the door again, the frame cracking along the jamb. “Do you hear me? You just assaulted a licensed physician and a nurse! I have the police on the line right now! They’re issuing an emergency bench warrant! You are going to a maximum-security psychiatric ward, and you will never, ever see Julian again!”
I sat on the far side of the king-sized bed, holding Julian against my chest, gently rocking him, humming a soft, rhythmic lullaby into his fine hair.
Julian’s crying subsided. He looked up at me with his wide, slate-blue eyes—so like his father’s in color, but entirely pure, untouched by malice.
“Shh, my love,” I whispered, kissing his forehead. “Mama’s here. No one is taking you.”
On the other side of the door, Dr. Sterling’s voice joined Nicholas’s.
“Sophie, this is Dr. Sterling,” she called out, her voice tight, breathing hard from the stairs. “Listen to me rationally. If you open this door and surrender the child, I will report this as an acute manic crisis rather than a violent assault. If you force the authorities to breach this room, the court will permanently terminate your parental rights tonight. Think of your son.”
I pulled my phone from my pocket.
The screen lit up.
It was 4:45 p.m.
Seventeen hours until the court hearing.
I opened the encrypted messaging app.
*Maya,* I typed. *They tried to inject me. I barricaded myself in the master bedroom with Julian. Nicholas has called the police to stage a violent arrest. Dr. Sterling is outside the door.*
Three seconds passed.
*Do not open that door for anyone,* Maya’s voice came through instantly in a voice note, hard as tempered steel. *I am with Detective Chief Inspector Helen Rossi of the Metropolitan Police Major Crime Command right now. We have the toxicology report. We have the Cayman wire transfers. We have the nursery camera footage.*
*What about the local precinct?* I asked, listening to the sirens beginning to wail in the far distance through the rainy London streets. *The local officers are coming right now.*
*Inspector Rossi is dispatching an armed tactical unit to override the local precinct dispatch,* Maya commanded. *The local officers don't know Nicholas is under active federal investigation for conspiracy to commit murder and corporate fraud. Let them knock. Do not unlock that door until Inspector Rossi gives you the code word: ARCHITECT.*
*Understood,* I whispered.
Outside, the sirens grew deafeningly loud.
Blue and red flashing lights painted the bedroom ceiling in wild, strobe-like arcs through the rain-streaked windows.
Tires screeched on the wet gravel of our driveway.
Downstairs, the front door was thrown open. Heavy boots thudded through the foyer.
“Up here! She’s up here!” Nicholas screamed down the stairs, his voice shifting instantly from furious rage back to the frantic, sobbing panic of a terrified husband. “Officers, thank God! She’s locked herself in the bedroom with our newborn! She has a knife! She’s threatening to end his life!”
The sound of four police officers running up the stairs shook the floorboards.
“Ma’am! This is the Metropolitan Police!” a booming male voice shouted through the bedroom door. “Open this door immediately! Step away from the infant!”
Nicholas was shouting outside the door. “Sophie, please! Don't hurt him! Put the baby down!”
Dr. Sterling was chiming in with clinical authority. “Officer, as her treating psychiatrist, I am invoking Section 136 of the Mental Health Act. She is in an acute, florid psychotic state with active infanticidal intent. You have full legal clearance to breach!”
“Stand back from the door!” the lead officer yelled.
A heavy tactical ram hit the bedroom door with an earth-shattering *BOOM*.
The wooden frame splintered. The armoire shifted back three inches, scraping horribly against the floor.
Julian screamed, burying his face in my sweater.
“Hold on, Julian,” I whispered, wrapping my body around him like a human bunker, shielding him with my spine. “Hold on.”
*BOOM.*
The ram hit again. The armoire tipped sideways, crashing to the floor with a deafening splinter of broken mahogany.
The door burst open.
Three uniformed police officers flooded the room with tactical flashlights, their batons drawn.
Behind them stood Nicholas, his clothes disheveled, wiping fake tears from his cheeks, and Dr. Sterling, clutching her clipboard like a shield.
“Drop the weapon!” the lead officer screamed, leveling a taser directly at my chest.
I didn't move. I didn't scream.
I sat calmly on the edge of the bed. Julian was wrapped securely in my arms. My hands were held high, open, empty, and entirely steady.
“I have no weapon, Officer,” I said, my voice ringing out with crystalline, terrifying clarity across the shattered room. “My name is Sophie Moreau. My husband, Nicholas Hastings, and that woman, Dr. Althea Sterling, have been systematically poisoning me with high-potency neuroleptics to steal custody of my child.”
The officer blinked, lowering the taser slightly, confused by the utter lack of hysteria, mania, or delirium in my voice.
“Officer, don't listen to her!” Nicholas yelled, stepping forward, his face pale with sudden, terrifying realization. “She’s manic! Taser her! Get the baby!”
“Shut up, Nicholas,” a new voice commanded from the hallway.
The police officers froze.
Stepping through the shattered doorway was a tall, severe woman in a grey charcoal trench coat, holding up a gold-embossed warrant card.
Beside her was Maya Vance.
“I am Detective Chief Inspector Helen Rossi, Major Crime Command,” the woman announced, her voice cutting through the room like an ice pick. “Every officer in this room, stand down immediately.”
Nicholas stared at her, his jaw dropping. “What is the meaning of this? This is an emergency domestic incident! My wife is insane!”
Inspector Rossi turned her cold, predatory gaze directly onto Nicholas.
“Architect,” Maya whispered, catching my eye from the doorway.
A slow, glorious breath filled my lungs.
“Nicholas Hastings,” Inspector Rossi said, stepping forward as two plainclothes detectives moved silently behind Nicholas and Dr. Sterling. “You are under arrest for conspiracy to administer noxious substances with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, child endangerment, perverting the course of justice, and corporate fraud.”
Dr. Sterling gasped, backing toward the hallway. “This is an outrage! I am a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists! I am here in an official medical capacity!”
“Dr. Althea Sterling,” Inspector Rossi continued without breaking stride, “you are under arrest for medical fraud, administering poison to facilitate a felony, and accepting five hundred thousand pounds in illegal offshore kickbacks from Cayman Alpha Holding.”
Dr. Sterling went completely white. The gold fountain pen slipped from her fingers, clattering onto the broken wood of the floor.
Nicholas lunged toward Maya. “You! You fabricated this! My lawyers will have your badge, Rossi! Do you know who I am? Do you know who my family is?”
Two detectives grabbed Nicholas by the elbows, kicking his feet out from beneath him, driving him face-first into the carpet.

The sound of stainless-steel handcuffs clicking around Nicholas’s wrists was the sweetest symphony I had ever heard.
