Chapter 5 - The Ashes of Moretti Holdings

The morning sun broke over the Manhattan skyline like a jagged shard of glass, casting long, harsh shadows across the floor-to-ceiling windows of Dominic Moretti’s private study on the forty-fifth floor.

The room was utterly silent. There were no hushed phone calls to offshore accounts, no nervous tapping of gold fountain pens, and no whispered plots of betrayal. The vultures had been cleared from the nest. What remained was a cold, absolute dominion that belonged entirely to the man standing by the window.

Dominic Moretti stood with a cup of black coffee in his hand, watching the morning commuter traffic crawl across the bridges spanning the East River. He wore a crisp, dark navy shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, revealing the faint, fading scars from the glass shards of the FDR crash. His mind was clear, sharp, and moving three steps ahead of anyone foolish enough to remain in his orbit.

Behind him, the heavy mahogany double doors clicked open.

Grace Miller walked in, carrying a fresh leather folder and a secure satellite tablet provided by Gabriel Costa. She no longer wore her gray cleaning smock or carried a microfiber cloth. Instead, she had traded them for a sharp, impeccably tailored charcoal pantsuit that fit her slender frame with quiet authority. Her dark hair was neatly pinned back, revealing the sharp, intelligent focus in her eyes.

“The federal prosecutors just filed the formal freeze on Arthur Sterling’s Swiss accounts,” Grace said, her voice steady and professional as she placed the tablet on the mahogany desk. “And the board members from the Brooklyn docks are downstairs waiting in the lobby. They want to know if the emergency restructuring applies to the shipping contracts.”

Dominic took a sip of his coffee, not turning around immediately. He listened to the crisp cadence of her voice, marveling at how seamlessly the former penthouse maid had stepped into the role of chief administrative coordinator within less than forty-eight hours.

“Let them sweat for another twenty minutes,” Dominic said, his voice a low, gravelly rumble. “Men like that only respect power when they’re forced to wait in its shadow. Have you finished auditing the ledger from the Brighton Beach syndicate accounts?”

Grace tapped the screen of the secure tablet, bringing up a complex financial matrix of shell companies, real estate holdings, and wire transfers.

“Every single cent Viktor Vance wired into the escrow account has been redirected back into Moretti Holdings legal reserves,” Grace reported, her fingers moving smoothly across the glass. “Furthermore, I found a hidden folder on Sterling’s desktop containing the acquisition deeds for the three major commercial piers in Queens. They were set to be transferred to Anthony’s personal name at midnight tonight. I’ve already voided the contracts and re-registered them under your direct trust.”

Dominic turned around, a slow, appreciative smile cutting across his weathered face. He walked over to the desk, leaning his hands against the polished wood as he looked down at her.

“You know, Grace, six months ago you were cleaning up whiskey glasses and hiding behind the baseboards,” Dominic said, his eyes carrying a glint of genuine amusement. “Now you’re dismantling a multi-million-dollar corporate hostile takeover before breakfast.”

Grace looked up, meeting his slate-gray gaze without flinching. “People who spend their lives looking down at others miss everything happening right at their feet, Mr. Moretti. I learned a long time ago that if you want to survive in this city, you have to watch the hands, not the face.”

“A valuable lesson,” Dominic murmured. He straightened up, walking toward the private elevator alcove. “Come on. Let’s go down to the boardroom and remind the captains who actually owns the keys to the city.”
