Chapter 8 - The Aftermath of the Storm

Three days later, the front page of the New York Tribune carried headlines that sent shockwaves through the financial and political establishment of the city.
MORETTI HOLDINGS PURGES CORRUPT EXECUTIVES; FEDERAL PROBE UNCOVERS MILLIONS IN EMBEZZLEMENT High-profile corporate lawyer Arthur Sterling and syndicate-linked figures arrested in sweeping dawn raids. Moretti leadership vows complete restructuring.
Inside the executive penthouse suite, the morning light poured warmly through the pristine glass windows. The white lilies that Grace had complained about in the hospital room were gone, replaced by deep red roses arranged in a heavy crystal vase on the mahogany desk.
Dominic sat at his desk, reviewing the final consolidated balance sheets of the holding company. Every account had been recovered, every shell company dismantled, and the federal investigators had officially closed their preliminary inquiry into the car crash after receiving anonymous, airtight digital evidence proving the brake lines had been intentionally sabotaged by external conspirators.
The door opened softly.
Grace walked in carrying a silver tray with two cups of freshly brewed black coffee and a stack of legal documents requiring his final signature.
She placed the tray on the desk, her movements smooth and practiced.
“The district attorney’s office just sent confirmation,” Grace said, her tone professional. “Veronica’s assets have been frozen pending her extradition hearings from the Bahamas. She tried to board a flight to Zurich yesterday afternoon using a forged passport.”
Dominic looked up from his papers, a faint, dry smile touching his lips. “She always did lack imagination when it came to running away.”
He leaned back in his leather chair, taking a sip of the coffee, and looked up at Grace. She stood across the desk, her posture confident, poised, and entirely transformed from the quiet, invisible maid who had once emptied his trash cans.
“You know, Grace,” Dominic said quietly, setting his cup down. “When I woke up in that hospital room and saw you standing over my bed, I thought you were just another ghost in a building full of liars.”
Grace met his gaze, her expression softening just a fraction. “I was a ghost, Mr. Moretti. At least until someone actually bothered to look at me.”
“You’re no ghost anymore,” Dominic said, standing up from his chair and walking around the desk until he stood just an arm’s length away from her. “You saved my life. And in this family, loyalty of that magnitude is never forgotten.”
Grace looked up into his slate-gray eyes, seeing the raw, hardened edges softened by genuine respect and gratitude.
“What happens now?” she asked softly.

Dominic reached into his jacket pocket, pulling out a set of sleek, platinum-engraved keys and placing them gently into her open palm.
“Now,” Dominic said with a dangerous, captivating smile, “we rebuild the empire. And this time, we make sure the people standing beside us are the ones who actually know how to hold the line.”
