Chapter 6 - The Shadows Beyond the Gates

The early morning mist still clung to the manicured lawns of San Pedro Garza García, but inside the secure perimeter of the Ríos estate, the atmosphere had shifted from tense vigilance to quiet watchfulness. The exposure of Ricardo’s betrayal had sent shockwaves through the regional syndicates. Across the state line, Miguel Garza’s operations were suddenly feeling the heat of federal investigations and coordinated pressure from rival factions who sensed weakness.

Alejandro Ríos stood in his second-floor study, looking down through the bulletproof glass at the front courtyard. Two sleek black SUVs idly idled near the fountain, their tinted windows reflecting the pale autumn sky.

Marco stepped into the room, holding a encrypted secure tablet.

“Garza is moving his safehouses, Boss,” Marco reported without preamble. “His lieutenants in Monterrey are scattering. They know we have the transaction ledgers from the north wing safe. But there’s a complication.”

Alejandro didn't turn around. His hands remained clasped behind his back. “What kind of complication?”

“Garza isn't just running. He’s left a final message at one of our transport hubs in Santa Catarina,” Marco said, his jaw tightening. “An ultimatum. He knows Ricardo is locked down, and he knows we dismantled his financial pipeline. He’s threatening to strike where it hurts most.”

Alejandro’s slate-gray eyes narrowed. He turned slowly, his face hardening into the mask of the ruthless cartel boss who had ruled the northern corridors for a decade. “Where?”

“Not the warehouses. Not the transport trucks,” Marco said quietly. “He knows about the girl. He knows Valeria is the one who unlocked the archive.”

A chilling silence settled over the study. The temperature in the room seemed to drop ten degrees.

“Double the security detail around the east wing,” Alejandro commanded, his voice dropping into a lethal, controlled whisper. “Move Valeria and her brother—once Leo is discharged from the recovery ward—directly into the main residential compound under twenty-four-hour guard. If anyone so much as looks at them sideways, I want their names before they hit the ground.”

“Already on it,” Marco nodded, turning toward the door. “And Alejandro... Garza still has informants inside the municipal police. We can’t rely on local transit lanes for the transfer.”

“Then we use our own private air corridor,” Alejandro said flatly. “No risks.”

As Marco exited, Alejandro walked back to the window. His fingers grazed the heavy mahogany sill. He had spent his entire life building an empire designed to crush threats with absolute, unyielding violence. But for the first time, the target wasn't a rival boss, a politician, or a cargo route.

It was a twenty-two-year-old cleaning maid from Santa Catarina and a four-year-old boy who had finally learned how to laugh again.

And Alejandro Ríos was going to burn down half of northern Mexico before he let anyone touch them.
