Chapter 7 - The Whispering Gallery

Down in the residential wing, the morning sun filtered warmly through the lace curtains of the nursery.

Mateo sat cross-legged on the plush Persian rug, carefully arranging a set of wooden toy blocks into a crooked tower. Beside him sat Valeria, her sleeves rolled up, helping him balance the final piece.

“There,” Valeria smiled, wiping a smudge of dust from her cheek. “A castle. Completely safe from dragons and monsters.”

Mateo looked at the tower, then up at Valeria. He reached out and gently tapped her hand—a small, hesitant gesture of affection that would have been unthinkable just a month ago.

“Safe,” the boy whispered softly.

Valeria’s breath caught in her throat. It was only the third word she had ever heard him speak, but it carried the weight of a thousand unspoken prayers. She pulled him gently into a warm embrace, resting her chin on his soft curls.

“Yes, campeón,” she murmured, fighting back a sudden rush of tears. “Always safe.”

The heavy oak door of the nursery swung open quietly, and Doña Socorro stepped inside, holding a silver tray with a pitcher of fresh juice and a sealed white envelope.

“Valeria,” the housekeeper said, her voice unusually subdued. “A courier dropped this off at the service entrance five minutes ago. It’s addressed to you.”

Valeria pulled back from Mateo, frowning slightly. She took the envelope from the tray. There was no return address, only her name written in hurried, block letters.

She tore open the flap and pulled out a single sheet of cheap lined notebook paper.

Inside was a short, handwritten note:

If you want your family in Santa Catarina to see tomorrow’s sunrise, walk out through the east service gate alone in twenty minutes. No guards. No Ríos.

The paper fluttered from Valeria’s trembling fingers, landing softly on the rug near Mateo’s building blocks.

Her blood ran ice cold.

“Valeria? What is it?” Socorro asked, stepping closer and noticing the sudden paleness in the young woman’s face.

“My mother,” Valeria gasped, her voice catching in her windpipe. “And Leo... they’re still at the small recovery clinic in Santa Catarina before the transfer. Garza’s men must have tracked them.”

Without a second thought, Valeria scrambled to her feet. The instinct to protect her family completely overrode her fear of the estate, of Garza, and of the unwritten rules of the cartel world. She turned toward the door.

“Valeria, wait!” Socorro cried out, reaching for her. “You can’t just walk out there! Mr. Ríos said—!”

“I have to go,” Valeria whispered, tears spilling over her lashes as she looked back at Mateo, who was staring up at her with big, confused eyes. “I can’t let them hurt my family.”

Before Socorro could stop her, Valeria bolted out of the nursery and down the grand hallway toward the service exit.
