Chapter 8 - The Gala of Ruin

The annual Metropolitan Charity Gala inside the Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was the crown jewel of New York high society. Hundreds of billionaires, politicians, and socialites mingled beneath glittering crystal chandeliers, sipping champagne and exchanging hollow pleasantries.
I arrived on Vincent’s arm, wearing a custom-tailored midnight-blue velvet gown that swept gracefully across the marble floor. My hair was styled in soft waves, and a simple, elegant diamond pendant rested against my collarbone—a gift Vincent had quietly slipped onto my vanity that morning.
The moment we stepped into the ballroom, the ambient murmur of conversation dipped dramatically. Every head turned. Whispers rippled through the crowd like wind through tall grass.
A few feet away, standing near the champagne tower, stood Tyler and Vanessa.
Vanessa wore a blinding, sequined gold dress, her arm linked tightly through Tyler’s. But as they saw us walk in, all color drained from their faces. The viral video had made them minor celebrities, but not the kind they wanted to be—financial blogs had already begun questioning the sudden, unexplained influx of cash into Vanessa’s personal accounts, and several high-society charities had quietly revoked their invitations.
They thought tonight was their redemption—an opportunity to mingle with Viktor Vance’s inner circle and regain their social standing.
Instead, they walked right into a slaughterhouse.
As Vincent and I walked toward the center of the room, the ballroom’s massive overhead projector screens—normally reserved for displaying charity donation totals—suddenly flickered, went black, and then flashed with a blinding white light.
Instead of charity logos, the giant screens displayed a crystal-clear, notarized forensic audit ledger: VANCE GLOBAL LOGISTICS: OFFSHORE MONEY LAUNDERING AND CORPORATE ESPIONAGE.
Below it, side-by-side banking records and wire transfer confirmations flashed onto the display, directly linking Vanessa’s personal shell company to Viktor Vance’s illegal syndicate accounts.
Gasps echoed across the ballroom. Glassware shattered against the floor as high-society guests recoiled in horror.
Vanessa shrieked, her hands flying to her mouth, tears of absolute panic springing to her eyes. "Turn that off! That’s a lie! Someone turn that off!" she screamed, her voice cutting shrilly through the hall.
Tyler spun around, his eyes wild with terror as he spotted Marcus and four federal marshals walking through the double doors toward them.
"No... no, this is a mistake!" Tyler stammered, backing away until his spine hit a marble pillar. "We didn't know! We were set up!"
I stood beside Vincent near the center of the room, my hands resting lightly in my pockets, watching them crumble under the weight of their own greed.
Viktor Vance, standing near the VIP balcony on the second tier, stared down at the screens with absolute, murderous fury. He reached into his jacket, his hand darting toward a hidden holster—
Before his fingers could even graze the grip of his weapon, three of Vincent’s elite snipers standing discreetly on the upper catwalk raised their laser sights, painting three distinct red dots directly across Viktor’s chest.
Viktor froze. He looked up at the catwalk, then down at Vincent.
Vincent didn't even draw a weapon. He simply raised his champagne glass in a silent, mocking toast to his rival.
Defeated, realizing his syndicate had been completely dismantled in a single evening, Viktor slowly dropped his hand, turned on his heel, and walked away into the shadows of the exit, never to be seen in New York again.

Down below, federal agents snapped steel handcuffs around Vanessa's wrists, while two officers escorted a sobbing, broken Tyler out through the double doors under the blinding flashbulbs of dozens of reporters.
The nightmare was over. The board was cleared.
