Chapter 10 - THE KINGDOM OF LIGHT

The evening reception under the illuminated white marquee was a roaring success.

The tables groaned under the weight of imported cheeses, roasted meats, vintage champagne, and a towering five-tier vanilla wedding cake adorned with edible sugar roses. The string quartet had transitioned into a lively jazz band, and the dance floor was packed with capos and society matrons alike, all laughing under the warm glow of twinkling fairy lights strung through the oak branches.

At the head table, Alessandro sat with his arm draped securely over the back of Sophia’s chair, his thumb gently stroking her bare shoulder.

Across from them sat Emma, happily devouring a slice of chocolate wedding cake while drawing elaborate pictures of flying rabbits on the back of a cocktail napkin.

“Penny for your thoughts, Mrs. Moretti,” Alessandro murmured, leaning down to press a soft kiss against Sophia’s temple.

Sophia smiled, leaning her head against his shoulder as she watched the guests dance beneath the stars. She thought back to the damp, miserable basement where they had lived just four years ago—the cold concrete floors, the terror of missing a shift, the crushing weight of poverty and fear.

“I was just thinking about how strange life is,” Sophia whispered softly. “If I had locked that basement door properly... if Emmy hadn't sneaked out... if she hadn't wasted her very last EpiPen on a stranger...”

“We wouldn’t be sitting here right now,” Alessandro finished her thought, his voice dropping into a low, fierce register. He reached across the table, his fingers gently tangling with hers. “You didn't waste anything, Sophia. Your daughter saved my life. And in doing so, she gave me a life worth saving.”

Sophia turned her head, looking up into his amber eyes—eyes that had once terrified her, but now held nothing but absolute, unwavering devotion.

“You know the council remnants are still whispering out there,” Sophia noted quietly, a hint of maternal protectiveness flashing in her dark eyes. “They think you’ve gone soft because of us.”

Alessandro let out a short, low bark of dark laughter. He reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a small, heavy silver object—the confiscated snake ring Arthur had worn four years ago, now melted down and flattened into a smooth, useless lump of scrap metal.

He tossed it carelessly into a silver champagne bucket on the table with a dull clink.

“Let them whisper,” Alessandro said, his voice carrying the calm, terrifying authority of a king whose throne was built on an impenetrable foundation of love and blood. “They can call me soft all they want. But the next person who forgets who rules this house won’t get the luxury of a warning from a four-year-old.”

He looked across the table at Emma, who had finished her drawing and was proudly holding it up for them to see. It depicted three stick figures standing beneath a massive, sprawling oak tree: a tall man with a crown, a smiling woman in a long dress, and a little girl holding a rabbit, surrounded by a sky full of bright, impossible stars.

Alessandro smiled, raising his crystal flute of champagne toward the child.

Emma beamed back, raising her glass of sparkling apple cider in a triumphant toast.

The wind blew softly off the Long Island Sound, rustling the leaves of the great oak trees above them. The Moretti empire was no longer built on fear, shadows, and blood. It was built on light, courage, and the unyielding strength of a little girl who knew that when someone couldn't breathe, you didn't look away—you stepped into the fire and saved them.
