Chapter 6 - THE SHADOWS AT THE GATES

It was a freezing November evening, exactly three years and eleven months since the night Emma had saved Alessandro’s life.

The Moretti Manor was quiet, draped in the heavy, elegant silence of an early winter snowstorm. Large, fat snowflakes drifted down from the slate-gray sky, coating the wrought-iron perimeter fences and muffling the sound of the city beyond.

Emma, now seven and a half, sat at the massive mahogany dining table in the family wing, diligently practicing her cursive writing under Sophia’s watchful eye. Her peanut allergy had been successfully treated through an experimental immunotherapy protocol funded by Alessandro, but she still carried a pink-labeled emergency pack in her backpack out of sentimental habit.

Down in the security control room on the ground floor, Viktor was monitoring the perimeter camera feeds.

Suddenly, a row of amber warning lights flashed across the master console.

“Boss,” Viktor muttered into his encrypted comms link, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper. “We’ve got movement at the north perimeter gate. Thermal imaging shows six uninvited guests scaling the brick wall. They’re carrying suppressed submachine guns.”

In the third-floor study, Alessandro—now thirty-seven, his dark hair threaded with distinguished silver at the temples—stopped reading his ledger.

He didn't panic. He didn't flinch. A cold, lethal stillness settled over his features.

“The internal council’s cleanup crew,” Alessandro murmured to himself. He stood up, walked over to the obsidian wall panel, pressed a biometric scanner, and slid open a concealed weapons locker carved into the stonework. He pulled out a customized Sig Sauer P226 pistol, checked the magazine with a practiced clack-click, and tucked it neatly into his leather shoulder holster beneath his cashmere sweater.

“Viktor,” Alessandro spoke into his lapel mic. “Let them breach the outer courtyard. Do not engage until they reach the greenhouse corridor. I want them inside the kill box before we drop the gates.”

“Copy that, Boss,” Viktor grunted.

Up in the dining room, Sophia heard the low, muffled thud of a distant security shutter slamming shut. Her pen stopped moving across the paper. She looked up, her dark eyes locking onto the heavy oak door leading to the hallway.

“Sophia,” Alessandro’s voice echoed smoothly through the intercom speaker set into the corner molding.

“Alessandro? What’s happening?” Sophia asked, her heart beginning to hammer against her ribs.

“Take Emma down to the reinforced safe room behind the kitchen,” Alessandro instructed, his tone completely calm, devoid of fear. “Lock the blast door from the inside. Do not open it for anyone’s voice except mine.”

“Are we under attack?” Sophia asked, her voice trembling slightly as she stood up and grabbed Emma by the hand.

“Just a few old debts coming due,” Alessandro replied softly. “I’ll be right back.”

Emma looked up at her mother, her big dark eyes wide with sudden recognition. She remembered the basement. She remembered the sound of breaking glass.

“Is it the bad men with the snake rings, Mommy?” Emma whispered.

Sophia knelt down, grabbing her daughter by the shoulders and pulling her tight against her chest. “Yes, baby. But Uncle Al is going to protect us. He always protects us.”
