Chapter 5 - THE EMPIRE'S NEW QUEEN

The transition was not announced with a press release; it was announced with absolute, terrifying finality.

Within forty-eight hours, the basement of Moretti Manor was gutted. The damp stone walls were stripped, insulated, and converted into a sprawling, sunlit multi-room suite filled with pale wood, plush carpets, and floor-to-ceiling bookshelves.

Sophia tried to resign three times. Each time, Alessandro simply slid her resignation letter into his shredder without looking up.

“You don’t work here anymore, Sophia,” Alessandro had told her on the third morning, standing in the newly renovated kitchen while a private chef prepared organic oatmeal for Emma. “You are no longer a maid.”

“Then what am I?” Sophia had asked, her voice shaking with a mixture of fear and pride. “A prisoner? A pet?”

“You are the head of household administration for the entire Moretti estate,” Alessandro replied smoothly, turning to face her with his hands in his pockets. “Which comes with a seven-figure salary, a fleet of armored town cars at your disposal, and a permanent security detail. You will never have to worry about the price of an EpiPen again for the rest of your life.”

Sophia had stared at him, speechless. “And Emma?”

Alessandro looked over toward the kitchen island, where Emma was currently using a silver spoon to feed dry cereal to Barnaby the stuffed rabbit, chattering happily in a language only she and the stuffed animal understood.

“Emma,” Alessandro said, his voice softening in a way his capos would never have believed possible, “is going to want for nothing. Starting with a pediatric specialist in Manhattan who is going to cure her allergy once and for all.”

For the next three years, the underworld watched in stunned silence as the most feared mafia boss in New York underwent a radical, inexplicable transformation.

The ruthless bachelor who had never permitted a woman to stay past sunrise in his penthouse suddenly became a fixture at Central Park playgrounds on Sunday afternoons. Syndicate capos arriving at the manor for high-level strategic summits would find their boss holding a pink plastic teacup in a sunlit conservatory, discussing the psychological profile of talking rabbits with a four-year-old—now seven—who called him “Uncle Al.”

Sophia grew into her new role with fierce, quiet dignity. She managed the vast estate staff with an iron fist wrapped in velvet, earning the absolute respect of hardened gangsters who quickly realized that offending Sophia Moretti—or her daughter—was a one-way ticket to sleeping with the fishes.

Yet, beneath the domestic peace, the syndicate’s enemies were growing restless.

The internal council—humiliated by Arthur’s exposure and eager to exploit what they perceived as Alessandro’s newfound “weakness”—began organizing a coordinated strike. They believed that by targeting Sophia and Emma, they could break the boss’s concentration, trigger a catastrophic security failure, and reclaim the New York shipping ports.

They had no idea what happens when you threaten the people who saved a dragon’s life.
