Chapter 7 - The New Horizon

Six months later.

Spring had arrived in New York City. Central Park was a sea of blooming cherry blossoms, and the air smelled of fresh rain and green leaves.

In the grand auditorium of Columbia University, hundreds of faculty members, students, and distinguished guests sat in silent respect as Dr. Casey Miller stood at the main podium. She was wearing her academic robes, delivering the keynote address for the International Legal History Symposium.

In the front row, sitting in a reserved seat, was Mary Miller.

Casey’s mother looked radiant, healthy, and full of life, her cheeks flushed with color after a successful kidney transplant three months earlier. Beside Mary sat Dominic Russo, impeccably dressed in a charcoal suit, holding a massive bouquet of red roses in his lap. He watched Casey with an expression of pure, unadulterated devotion.

"...and so," Casey spoke into the microphone, her voice carrying effortlessly across the historic hall, "we must remember that language is not merely a tool for recording laws. It is the framework of human power. Those who treat language with carelessness will eventually be undone by it; but those who understand its true depth possess the power to build justice where tyranny once reigned."

The auditorium erupted into thunderous applause. Standing ovations echoed off the stone walls.

Casey smiled warmly, bowing her head slightly, her eyes locking onto her mother, who was wiping tears of joy from her eyes, and then onto Dominic, who stood up and applauded with fierce pride.

After the ceremony, guests flooded the courtyard outside. Casey was surrounded by professors, students, and legal scholars congratulating her on her brilliant speech.

Eventually, the crowd cleared slightly, allowing Dominic to walk up to her, holding the bouquet of red roses.

"For the guest of honor," Dominic said, presenting the flowers to her.

Casey took the roses, smelling their sweet fragrance. "Thank you, Dominic."

Mary Miller walked over, wrapping her arms tightly around her daughter. "Oh, Casey... I am so proud of you, sweetheart. Your father would have cried his eyes out if he were here today."

"He's watching, Mom," Casey whispered, kissing her mother’s cheek. "I know he is."

Mary smiled gently, then looked at Dominic, giving him a warm, motherly pat on his arm. "I'll let you two have a moment. I'm going to grab a cup of tea with Professor Vance."

As her mother walked away to join the faculty group, Dominic took Casey’s hand, leading her toward a quiet, sunlit stone archway overlooking the green lawns of the university quad.

"You were incredible today," Dominic said, looking down at her with soft, loving eyes.

"I was nervous," Casey admitted with a soft laugh. "Standing in front of two hundred legal scholars is almost as intimidating as standing in front of the Valenti family."

"You handled the Valentis far better than I ever did," Dominic joked gently.

He reached into his suit pocket, pulling out a small velvet box.

Casey’s breath hitched in her throat.

Dominic took a slow, deliberate breath, looking into her eyes with total vulnerability.

"Casey," Dominic said softly, his voice trembling slightly with emotion. "When I met you at Maison Étoile, I was a man trapped in a dangerous, dark world, surrounded by people who only wanted to use me or destroy me. I thought power was about fear."

He opened the velvet box. Inside rested an exquisite ring—a flawless, emerald-cut diamond flanked by two sapphire baguettes, set in platinum.

"You showed me that true power comes from truth, intelligence, and love," Dominic continued, looking deep into her eyes. "You saved my business, you saved my life, and you gave me a reason to build a better future. I don't ever want to sign another contract unless your name is on it next to mine."

He looked at her with complete devotion.

"Dr. Casey Miller... will you marry me?"

Casey looked at the stunning ring, then looked up into the eyes of the man who had protected her, respected her, and loved her beyond measure.

Tears of pure happiness spilled down her cheeks.

"Yes," Casey whispered, her voice overflowing with love. "Yes, Dominic. A thousand times yes!"

May you like

Dominic slipped the ring onto her finger. It fit perfectly.

He pulled her into his arms, lifting her slightly as he kissed her deeply beneath the sunlit stone archway, surrounded by the blooming cherry blossoms of spring.
