Chapter 3 - Breaking the Threshold

The front door unlocked with a quiet, familiar click that was completely swallowed by the ambient hum of the morning refrigerator. I stepped into the foyer, sliding my boots off with deliberate, silent care. The house smelled of expensive coffee and stale perfume—a scent that didn't belong to me, and certainly didn't belong to the life I thought I was defending overseas.

Upstairs, a muffled sound drifted down the stairwell: low laughter, followed by the heavy creak of floorboards in the master bedroom.

I didn't draw a weapon. I didn't yell. I walked calmly toward the kitchen, set my duffel bag on the counter, and poured myself a glass of cold water.

A few moments later, quick footsteps pattered down the stairs. Emily appeared at the corner of the hallway, her school backpack slung over one shoulder. She stopped dead in her tracks, her eyes going wide as saucers, her hands flying to cover her mouth to stifle a gasp.

“Dad?” she whispered, her voice trembling violently.

I set the glass down and walked over to her, kneeling slightly so I could look directly into her eyes. The dark circles under her eyes told a story of weeks filled with stress, anxiety, and sleepless nights she had carried entirely alone.

“Hey, sweetheart,” I said softly, keeping my voice steady so she wouldn't break. “I’m home.”

Tears instantly spilled over her eyelashes. Before she could throw her arms around my neck, I pulled her into a tight, protective embrace, whispering against her hair, “You did good, Em. You kept it together. I’m here now. You don't have to carry this another second.”

“I was so scared,” she sobbed quietly into my shoulder. “Her car is outside… he’s still upstairs—”

“I know,” I murmured, pulling back and wiping a tear from her cheek. “Where’s Evan?”

“He’s already in the kitchen eating cereal, he didn't hear anything yet.”

“Good. I want you to take Evan, go out the back door, and wait by Marcus’s car. He’s parked down the lane waiting for my signal. Go on, sweetheart. Dad’s got this.”

Emily nodded frantically, grabbed her brother—who looked up from his cereal bowl with a confused, sleepy grin as his sister practically dragged him out the back door—and disappeared into the morning air.

Once the back door clicked shut, the house was entirely silent again.

I took a slow, deep breath, rolled my shoulders back, and started up the stairs. Every step felt heavy, deliberate, and final.

When I reached the master bedroom, the door was cracked open an inch. Warm, golden sunlight streamed through the sheer curtains, illuminating the king-sized bed where Natalie lay tangled in the white sheets, fast asleep. Beside her, a man with broad shoulders and dark, messy hair lay snoring softly, his arm draped casually over my wife’s bare waist.

I reached out, wrapped my hand around the brass doorknob, and shoved the door open wide enough to rattle the frame against the drywall.
