Chapter 8 - The Empty House

Six months after the gavel fell, the legal dust had finally settled, leaving a clean slate in its wake.
I received an official notification from the real estate agency handling the court-ordered liquidation of our former home. The property had sold quickly, and after paying off the remaining mortgage and settling legal fees, the remaining equity was placed into a secure trust fund dedicated entirely to Emily and Evan’s college education.
On a bright Saturday morning in April, I drove back out to the old neighborhood one last time.
The house looked entirely different from the outside. The pristine, manicured flower beds were slightly overgrown; the new owners were clearly still making the place their own. I parked my truck across the street and just sat there for a few minutes, watching the front porch where I used to sit with my kids on warm summer evenings.
My phone buzzed in the cup holder.
It was a text from Emily, who was currently at soccer practice with her new team across town.
Hey Dad! Can we stop by the shelter on the way home to look at that Golden Retriever puppy we talked about?
I smiled, picking up the phone and typing back immediately.
Already checked our schedule, sweetheart. I’ll pick you and Evan up at 3:00 PM. We’re bringing him home.
A string of enthusiastic emojis flashed back across the screen.
May you like
I locked the phone, tossed it onto the passenger seat, and put the truck in drive. I didn't look back at the house in the rear-view mirror. The ghosts of the past were buried back there, locked away in a chapter of my life that had finally come to a close.
For the first time in years, the road ahead was completely wide open, and the only direction left to go was forward.
