Chapter 7 - The Legal Battlefield

Three weeks after that morning, the preliminary divorce hearings began in a sterile, fluorescent-lit courtroom in downtown Richmond.
Natalie had hired a high-priced divorce attorney who tried every procedural trick in the book. They argued that my military deployment had caused emotional abandonment, that the financial transfers were standard household expenses, and that custody should be split evenly despite the mountains of surveillance evidence, bank records, and sworn testimony from Marcus and myself.
Sitting across the aisle, Natalie looked like a ghost of the woman who had once curated a pristine image of domestic perfection. Her designer clothes looked slightly worn, her hair was pulled back into a simple, severe ponytail, and she kept her eyes fixed downward, refusing to look at me.
Our attorney—a bulldog named Sarah Vance whom Marcus had recommended—didn't even need to raise her voice.
“Your Honor,” Sarah said smoothly, stepping up to the podium and placing a thick binder on the mahogany ledge. “We submit into evidence complete forensic accounting reports proving the systematic dissipation of marital assets, alongside digital surveillance logs confirming habitual infidelity. Furthermore, we submit a notarized statement from the primary minor child, detailing the hostile and emotionally damaging environment created by the defendant within the family residence.”
The judge, a stern-faced woman with silver hair, flipped through the documentation page by page. Every minute that passed felt like an hour in the dead silence of the courtroom.
Finally, the judge looked up, fixing her gaze squarely on Natalie and her flustered lawyer.
“Mrs. Mercer,” the judge said, her voice cutting through the courtroom like a razor. “In my twenty years on the bench, I have rarely seen a more blatant disregard for marital obligation, financial trust, and parental responsibility. The court accepts the petitioner’s filings in full.”
The gavel fell with a sharp, echoing crack.
The ruling was absolute:
Full primary physical and legal custody awarded to me, with supervised, restricted visitation for Natalie.
Complete forfeiture of Natalie’s claim to the primary marital residence and remaining shared assets due to proven financial dissipation and fraud.

A binding court order mandating repayment of the fourteen thousand dollars siphoned from the family accounts.
Natalie’s attorney buried his face in his hands, while Natalie let out a choked, desperate sob that echoed through the empty benches behind us. I didn't feel triumph. I didn't feel anger. I felt only a profound, weightless release—like cutting away a dead limb that had been dragging me down for years.
