Chapter 3 - The Shadow Over the Hospital

While Emily returned to her scrubbing, miles away across the city, the black Moretti convoy slipped through the iron gates of a heavily guarded private medical facility.

In the penthouse suite of St. Jude Memorial Hospital, Ruth Carter lay resting on her adjustable medical bed, the rhythmic hiss of her oxygen concentrator filling the quiet room. Her skin was paper-thin, her breathing shallow, but her eyes were bright as she looked at her daughter when Emily arrived for her evening visit.

“You’re late, sweetheart,” Ruth whispered, her voice weak.

“Traffic was bad, Mom,” Emily lied smoothly, leaning down to kiss her forehead, carefully hiding the fatigue and the lingering tremor in her hands. She dared not mention the billionaire who had thrown a coffee cup at her head earlier that morning; her mother had enough to worry about without knowing Emily had narrowly avoided a mob execution over breakfast.

As Emily adjusted the IV drip, a soft knock echoed at the private suite door.

Before Emily could answer, the door swung open, and Dr. Harrison—the lead oncologist overseeing Ruth’s case—stepped inside. He wasn't alone. Two imposing men in dark suits stood silently in the hallway behind him.

“Miss Carter,” Dr. Harrison began, clearing his throat nervously. He looked unusually pale, shifting his weight from foot to foot. “I need to speak with you regarding your mother’s treatment schedule.”

Emily stood up, wiping her hands on her apron. “We already discussed this, Doctor. The insurance appeal was denied, but I’m picking up extra shifts at the diner. I’ll have the payment for the next round of targeted therapy by Friday.”

Dr. Harrison glanced uneasily at the two suited men standing in the corridor. “That... well, that won’t be necessary, Miss Carter. In fact, an anonymous corporate benefactor has stepped in and fully settled your mother’s remaining medical balance—past, present, and future.”

Emily froze, her heart skipping a beat. “An anonymous benefactor? That’s impossible. Who?”

“We are not permitted to disclose client identities,” the doctor stammered, handing over a thick, embossed folder filled with cleared financial statements and medical clearance approvals. “Furthermore, your mother has been immediately upgraded to our VIP oncology wing, effective tonight.”

Ruth blinked in surprise from the bed. “Emily? What is this?”

Emily stared at the documents, her mind racing. There was only one person in Chicago with the wealth, the reach, and the sudden motivation to wipe out her debts within twelve hours of a confrontation at a diner.

Vincent Moretti.
