Chapter 6 - The Unspoken Line

Before Julian’s fist could complete its arc, a heavy, calloused hand clamped around his wrist with the unyielding grip of a hydraulic press.
Julian gasped in shock, stumbling backward as he tried to yank his arm free. He looked up, expecting to see his father intervening.
Instead, it wasn't Vincent who held him.
Standing just inside the study doorway, half-hidden in the shadows of the arched entrance, was another man—older than Julian by a few years, carrying an aura of lethal, quiet authority that made even Vincent Moretti look like a bureaucrat.
It was Marcus Moretti—Vincent’s estranged eldest son, who had vanished into the deep underbelly of the European syndicates a decade ago after a bitter, bloody falling-out with his father.
Marcus slowly released Julian’s wrist, stepping out into the light. He wore an immaculate black suit, his dark hair combed back neatly, his expression carved from absolute ice.
“Touch her, Julian, and I’ll break every bone in your arm before you can blink,” Marcus said. His voice was quiet, deadpan, and terrifyingly sincere.
Julian staggered back, clutching his bruised wrist, his face turning pale with a mixture of shock and blind rage. “Marcus?! What the hell are you doing here?! You were supposed to stay across the Atlantic!”
Marcus ignored his brother entirely. His dark, piercing eyes shifted toward Emily, scanning her with a brief, calculating intensity before shifting to his father.
“I received word that the old man was losing his grip and letting outsiders walk all over the estate,” Marcus said smoothly, walking toward the center of the room. “I came back to ensure the family business isn't dragged down by sentimentality. But it seems,” Marcus added, glancing back at Emily with a faint, appreciative smirk, “the waitress has more spine than anyone else in this room.”
Vincent leaned back against his desk, crossing his arms over his chest. He didn't look angry at Marcus’s sudden, unauthorized return; instead, a strange, dangerous light gleamed in the old mob boss's eyes. The dynasty was fracturing, and the wolves were circling.
“Marcus,” Vincent said evenly. “This doesn't concern you.”

“Everything concerning the Moretti name concerns me, Father,” Marcus replied, his voice dropping an octave. He stepped closer to Emily, shielding her instinctively from Julian’s furious glare. “Especially when you’re inviting innocent bystanders into a warzone you no longer have the strength to control.”
Emily stood between the three Moretti men—father and two estranged sons—realizing with sudden, chilling clarity exactly what kind of lethal web she had stumbled into. This wasn't just a diner dispute over a broken coffee cup. She had walked straight into the middle of a civil war for control of the most feared criminal empire in America.
