Chapter 5 - The Family Dynamic

As Vincent handed the folder over, a heavy set of double doors on the far side of the study suddenly flew open with a loud, echoing crash.
“Father! We need to talk about the dock acquisitions immediately—,” a sharp, commanding voice rang out.
A man in his early thirties strode into the room. He wore an elegant, dark charcoal suit, his dark wavy hair slightly tousled, and his jaw shadowed by sharp stubble. His eyes burned with an intense, restless energy.
It was Julian Moretti—Vincent’s only son and the heir apparent to the syndicate.
Julian stopped dead in his tracks as he noticed Emily standing across the room. His sharp gaze flicked between his father and the young woman in the simple blouse. A cold, sardonic smile crept across Julian’s face.
“Ah,” Julian drawled, his tone dripping with arrogant condescension. “I see the old man is finally branching out into hiring civilian consultants. Or is this the new accountant, Father? She looks a bit underdressed for a board meeting.”
Vincent’s expression hardened instantly. The warmth that had briefly touched his eyes vanished, replaced by a cold, authoritarian mask.
“Watch your tone, Julian,” Vincent warned, his voice dropping into a dangerous register. “Miss Carter is a guest in this house.”
Julian laughed—a sharp, dismissive sound that echoed off the stone walls. He walked closer, circling Emily like a vulture inspecting a wounded animal. He had spent his entire life living under the crushing shadow of his father, constantly undermined, belittled, and treated like a disappointment. Every weakness Vincent displayed toward outsiders or subordinates enraged Julian.
“A guest?” Julian sneered, turning his gaze back to his father. “You’re getting soft, old man. Ever since your heart scare last winter, you’ve been losing your edge. Bringing random nobodies into the inner sanctum? What’s next? Are you going to hand over the shipping lanes to a diner waitress?”
Emily’s eyes narrowed. She recognized that type of arrogance instantly—it was the same toxic entitlement she had fought against in corporate offices and insurance boardrooms, magnified a hundred times over by wealth and unchecked power.
“I may be a waitress, Mr. Moretti junior,” Emily said, her voice cutting through the room like a blade, “but at least I earned my place in this room through hard work, rather than riding on my father’s coattails.”
Julian froze. His head snapped toward her, his dark eyes flashing with absolute fury. For twenty years, nobody had ever dared talk back to him inside his own home.

“You arrogant little bitch,” Julian hissed, taking a threatening step forward. He raised his hand, his
fingers curling into a fist, ready to strike her across the face. “I’ll teach you how to speak to a Moretti!”
