Chapter 7 - The Six Quiet Words

The tension inside the mahogany study reached a boiling point. The air felt thick, charged with decades of unspoken resentment, betrayal, and violence.
Julian’s face twisted in an ugly sneer as he looked at his older brother. “You think you can just waltz back in here after ten years and act like you own the place? Father is still head of this family!”
“Father’s time is over, Julian, and yours never truly began,” Marcus retorted coldly, his hand resting casually near his jacket. “You’re a spoiled child playing gangster with money you didn't earn.”
“Enough!” Vincent roared, slamming his palm down onto the mahogany desk with a force that rattled the crystal decanter and glasses.
The entire room fell silent. Vincent stood up to his full height, his chest heaving, his eyes burning with the remnant fire of an apex predator who refused to be put out to pasture.
“You both think you’re vultures waiting for a carcass,” Vincent snarled, glaring at his sons. “You think empires are won by shouting, by throwing tantrums, by losing control over petty grievances.” He turned his gaze slowly toward Emily, who stood unflinching amidst the chaos. “And then a woman who makes nine dollars an hour walks into my diner, takes a cup of coffee to the face, and tells me she will end me without blinking an eye.”
Julian let out a bitter, mocking laugh. “What, are you adopting her now, Father? Is she your new heir?”
Emily turned her head slowly, fixing her steady, unflinching eyes directly on Julian. The absolute contempt in her gaze wiped the smirk right off his face.
She took one deliberate step forward, breaking the silence of the room. Her heart was racing, but her voice—when it finally left her lips—was impossibly calm, quiet, and deadly clear.
Six simple words dropped into the heavy air of the study like falling guillotines:
“You’re both pathetic little boys.”
Julian’s jaw dropped in sheer disbelief. Marcus raised a single eyebrow, a dark, dangerous smile slowly spreading across his face. Vincent closed his eyes for a brief second, realizing with profound clarity that this woman possessed a terrifying, unyielding strength that neither of his sons would ever possess.
Julian lunged forward, blind with humiliation. “Why you little—!”
He didn't even take two steps.
Marcus moved with lightning speed, stepping directly into Julian’s path. With a single, brutal, calculated punch to the jaw, Marcus sent his younger brother crashing backward into the heavy oak bookshelves, shattering a row of antique volumes and sending Julian sprawling onto the Persian rug, unconscious.
Marcus shook out his hand, smoothed the lapel of his black suit, and turned his gaze back toward Emily.
“He had that coming for about twenty years,” Marcus said smoothly.

Vincent exhaled slowly, looking down at his unconscious son on the floor, then up at Emily. For the first time in his long, brutal life, the billionaire mafia boss offered a gesture of absolute, genuine respect—he bowed his head.
Emily didn't smile, nor did she cower. She simply turned around, walked steadily out of the mahogany study, and left the Moretti empire entirely in ruins behind her, knowing that the world no longer owned her—she owned it.
