Chapter 4 - The Vance Syndicate

The sun rose over the Manhattan skyline, painting the grey waters of the Hudson in strokes of cold gold and bruised purple.
Nora stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of the loft office, wrapped in a warm, dry wool blanket Leo had provided, staring out at the cargo ships moving slowly down the river. Her old life—the cardboard boxes, the biting wind under the bridge, the constant, gnawing hunger—felt like a nightmare she had finally woken up from.
Viktor Vance sat behind a massive mahogany desk, reviewing a stack of thick paper files while sipping black coffee. For the last hour, the office had been a revolving door of men in suits bringing reports, whispering updates about rival factions, shipping routes, and police movements. Nora had watched in quiet fascination as the invisible gears of a massive criminal empire turned right in front of her eyes.
"You're staring," Viktor said without looking up from his papers.
"I'm trying to figure out how a man who runs half the shipping ports in the Northeast ends up sinking his own car in the middle of the night," Nora replied evenly, turning away from the window.
Viktor set his coffee cup down and leaned back in his leather chair, interlocking his fingers over his flat stomach. "Even kings have traitors in their court, Nora. Someone inside my inner circle sold my route to the Marcone family. They wanted me dead before the midnight summit."
"And you survived by sheer stubbornness?"
"I survived because I'm harder to kill than most," Viktor said flatly, devoid of arrogance, stating it as a simple law of physics. He picked up a sleek, gold-plated pen and tapped it twice against the desk. "Leo."
The enforcer stepped out of the shadows near the door. "Boss?"
"Take Miss Kane to the penthouse on Central Park West. Make sure she is fitted with proper clothes, fed a real meal, and given the master suite."
Nora’s eyes widened. "Wait. Hold on a second. I didn't agree to move into your penthouse! I want my debt settled, and then I want out of this city. I want to go somewhere quiet, finish my degree, and start over."
Viktor stood up, walking around the desk with a slow, deliberate stride. He stopped a foot away from her, towering over her slight frame.
"You think you can just walk away from this?" Viktor asked, his voice dropping into a dangerous, hypnotic register. "The moment you pulled me out of that car, your old life ended, Nora. If you walk out those doors right now, Frank Marcone's men will find you within twelve hours. They will assume you know where my safehouses are, where my accounts are, and who betrayed me. They will torture you to death in an alley."
Nora felt the breath catch in her throat. Every instinct screamed that he was manipulating her, yet she knew deep down he was entirely right.
"So what are my choices?" she whispered, her voice trembling slightly. "Be your prisoner in a fancy cage?"
"Not a prisoner," Viktor corrected softly. "A partner. Or at least... protected." He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, heavy velvet box. He flipped it open, revealing a platinum keycard stamped with the Vance Syndicate crest. "You saved my life, Nora. In my world, that makes you untouchable. Nobody in this city will ever touch a hair on your head again. But you stay under my roof, under my rules."
Nora looked at the keycard, then up at Viktor’s dark, unreadable eyes. She had spent the last two years running from a world that had dealt her an impossible hand. Now, standing on the precipice of the criminal underworld, she realized she had a choice: cower in fear, or take the power that was being offered to her on a silver platter.
"If I stay," Nora said, her chin lifting with a sudden, fierce spark of defiance, "you're going to fund my nursing degree. Every single semester. Paid in full."

Viktor stared at her for a long moment, stunned by her audacity. Then, a slow, genuine smile broke across his hard face—a smile that made him look less like a ruthless mob boss and more like a man who had finally found his match.
"Done," Viktor said. "Welcome to the family, Nora."
