Chapter 9 - A New Empire

Six months later, the spring sun was shining brightly over a sprawling, immaculate estate in Westchester County.

The stone pathways were lined with blooming cherry blossoms, and the air smelled of wet grass and fresh rain. Inside the main study of the estate, a massive mahogany desk sat covered in legal documents, medical journals, and financial portfolios.

Nora Kane—now officially registered under a new legal identity as Nora Vance—sat at the desk, wearing a crisp white blouse and gold-rimmed reading glasses, signing her name across the bottom of a university tuition clearance form.

Accepted: Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. Full scholarship endowment.

She set the pen down, leaned back in her leather chair, and smiled.

The door opened softly, and Viktor stepped into the room, holding two cups of black coffee. He set one down on the desk beside her, leaning his hip against the edge of the mahogany wood.

"First semester starts in September," Viktor noted, glancing at the acceptance letter. "You ready to be a doctor again?"

"More than ready," Nora said, picking up her coffee cup and taking a sip. "Though I have to admit, my clinical rotation experience under the George Washington Bridge was a bit more unconventional than most."

Viktor’s lips twitched into a rare, genuine smile. "You handled yourself better than most of my enforcers."

"Practice makes perfect," she teased.

The Vance Syndicate had changed under their joint influence. Viktor had streamlined his operations, cutting out the volatile street violence and consolidating his power into legitimate international shipping, real estate development, and high-tech security logistics. He was no longer just a feared mob boss; he was a titan of industry, untouchable, legitimate, and secure.

And Nora was no longer a homeless girl surviving on scraps. She was a partner, an equal, and the only person in the world who could look Viktor Vance in the eye and tell him no.

Viktor reached out, resting his hand over hers on the desk. His skin was warm, strong, and completely steady.

"Do you ever miss it?" Viktor asked quietly, his dark eyes searching hers. "The old life? The normal world?"

Nora looked down at her hands—hands that had once been stained with dirt and frozen to the bone under a concrete bridge, hands that had sewn up bullet wounds in the dark, and hands that were now about to heal the sick and save lives once again.

She looked back up at Viktor, a bright, unshakable smile lighting up her face.

"Not for a single second," Nora said. "The river took everything I was. But it gave me everything I'm ever going to need."

Viktor leaned down, capturing her lips in a deep, fierce kiss that sealed their past, their present, and every dark, beautiful tomorrow they would conquer together.
